Summary: The interaction between sunflower and microwave signal is still not fully understood. Our analysis reveals differences in the backscattering response of sunflower in the ascending and descending orbits for VV polarization and VH/VV polarization ratio due to the directional behavior of the flower head. We found that VH/VVdes is a preferable parameter for identifying sunflower phenological stages.

Summary: This study observed the movements and action potentials of Mimosa pudica L. plants, revealing spontaneous rapid leaf movements and action potentials in intact plants, with a delay between the appearance of action potential and leaf movement, suggesting that action potentials may trigger the rapid leaf movements.

Summary: The downy mildew disease of sunflower caused by Plasmopara halstedii has a significant economic impact on sunflower cultivation. This study used whole transcriptome sequencing to investigate the developmental phases of Pl. halstedii infecting Helianthus annuus. By analyzing the upstream regulatory gene sequences of co-expressed genes, conserved motifs potentially involved in binding transcription factors were identified. These motifs were also associated with virulence related genes and could be further studied to understand their role in regulating pathogenesis stages.

Summary: Evaluating the allelopathy relationship between different crops is important for understanding the interaction between plants and utilizing their positive effects while avoiding negative effects. In this study, the allelopathic effect of sunflower extracts on pea growth and physiological traits was investigated. The results showed that fertilized sunflower extracts at 25% and 50% concentrations acted as biostimulants and stimulated pea seed germination, while unfertilized extracts at 75% concentration inhibited seed germination. The extracts also had effects on above-ground and root dry mass, photosynthetic rate, and physiological traits of pea. The allelopathic effect was stronger with root extracts and higher concentrations. An increasing concentration of extracts also affected water use efficiency and stomatal conductance of pea plants.

Summary: When a single plant tissue detects environmental challenges, systemic signaling is activated to adjust the plant's physiology and morphology for better survival and reproduction. This study reveals that local wounding induces changes in H2O2 levels and NADPH oxidase-derived apoplastic H2O2 release, both of which rely on Ca2+ signaling through glutamate-receptor-like Ca2+ channels. Furthermore, peroxisomal Ca2+ regulates H2O2 levels by modulating the GC switch states, providing insights into the functions of plant systemic acclimation and optimized H2O2 signaling through interplay between the GC switch and NADPH oxidases.

Summary: This study discovered self-similar regulatory mechanisms of normal automaticity in sinoatrial nodal pacemaker cells across species, enabling the prediction of APCL, heart rate, and body mass based on Ca2+-Vm kinetics. This finding will aid in the development of novel pharmacological and biological pacemakers with wide-range rate regulation, and their translation to target recalcitrant human SSS.
