A new paleomagnetic study was carried out on the Findikli formation in the Amasya region, which is to the north of the Ankara-Erzincan Neotethyan suture zone, in order to better understand the paleogeographic evolution of the Pontides tectonic belt during the Maastrichtian. Samples were collected from volcanoclastic sandstones and lavas at 51 sites. Rock magnetic experiments identified pseudo-single domain (PSD) titanomagnetite as the main magnetic carriers at the majority of sites. Progressive thermal and alternating demagnetization revealed that the characteristic remanent component is removed between 400 and 580 degrees C or 20-100 ml, respectively. A high temperature component, which indicates the presence of titano-hematite, is found only in some lavas. Declinations show a systematic dispersion across the study area related to tectonic rotations about vertical axes. Inclinations are consistent, however, and yield a mean paleolatitude of 20.0 degrees N +/- 2.5 degrees for the Maastrichtian. Comparison of the results from this study with the reference direction of the East Pontides from the Turonian-Campanian is best explained with a model involving slab roll-back and marginal basin formation between 90 and 65 Ma period. Summary: The use of iron as the mortar phase in nacre-like composites leads to high fracture toughness and stiffness, as well as unique magnetic, electrical, and thermal functionalities. These metal-ceramic composites demonstrate outstanding fracture resistance, magnetization, and the ability for fast induction heating, making them potentially useful in transport, aerospace, and robotic applications requiring weight minimization combined with specific functionalities.

Summary: The MoEDAL trapping detector is made up of approximately 800 kg of aluminum volumes and was exposed to proton-proton collisions during run 2 of the LHCb program. Evidence for particles with electric and magnetic charge in the trapping detector was sought using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. By excluding dyons and monopoles within certain charge and mass ranges, the study provides important insights into the characteristics of these particles.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate three methods to estimate the relative proportion of SP and SSD particle content in materials, including the Day-Dunlop plot, FORC, and PCA, as well as the relationship between reversible and irreversible magnetization. The results show that these methods have differences in their ability to detect SP particles in different size ranges.

High-resolution total field magnetic anomaly maps of Lake Iznik (NW Turkey): assessment of faults which play important roles in tectonics of the lake

Gulten Aktas, Z. Mumtaz Hisarli, A. Sinan Demirel

Summary: This study analyzed the tectonic elements and seismic faults around Lake Iznik using marine magnetic data and other geophysical data, revealing the tectonic evolution of the region. The research found significant linear structural trends around the lake, which were correlated with seismic data and faults. The lake was connected to Gemlik Bay and the Marmara Sea approximately 10 million years ago, and a fault disconnected it from Gemlik Bay between the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs.

Assessing inclination flattening in the Holocene: insights from sediment data and global models

Pengfei Liu, Sanja Panovska, Keke Zhang, Ann M. Hirt

Summary: Lacustrine and marine sediments are important sources of information for constructing Holocene global geomagnetic field models. The question of whether sediment compaction leads to biasing of inclination is evaluated using the Elongation/Inclination (E/I) method on 78 sedimentary records worldwide, with 20 records indicating flattening. The results suggest that shallow inclination may not only result from compaction but may reflect the structure of the geomagnetic field on short timescales, indicating that secular variation is not averaged out over the Holocene.

Demantoid from Kerman Province, South-east Iran: A Mineralogical and Gemmological Overview

Vahid Ahadnejad, Michael S. Krzemnicki, Ann Marie Hirt

Summary: Demantoid from Kerman Province in south-east Iran was analyzed using multiple techniques, including microscopy, spectroscopy, chemical analysis, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The findings indicate that the samples have spectroscopic and chemical properties consistent with demantoid from serpentinite host rock. The colors of the samples range from yellowish green to deep green, depending on the levels of Cr and Fe, which also contribute to their paramagnetic susceptibility. The Iranian demantoid samples have relatively high concentrations of trace elements Cr, Ge, Ni, and Co, distinguishing them from stones of other localities.
