We explore the photonic (bright) side of the dynamical Coulomb blockade (DCB) by measuring the radiation emitted by a dc voltage-biased Josephson junction embedded in a microwave resonator. In this regime Cooper pair tunneling is inelastic and associated with the transfer of an energy 2eV into the resonator modes. We have measured simultaneously the Cooper pair current and the photon emission rate at the resonance frequency of the resonator. Our results show two regimes, in which each tunneling Cooper pair emits either one or two photons into the resonator. The spectral properties of the emitted radiation are accounted for by an extension to DCB theory.

Summary: Graphene serves as a promising platform for electron quantum optics, with the capability to tune electronic beam splitters and achieve nearly unity transmission. Comparisons with conventional semiconductor interferometers show graphene's robustness to universal processes driving quantum coherence.

Summary: The experiment demonstrates that a dc-biased Josephson junction in series with two microwave resonators emits entangled beams of microwaves. By measuring second-order coherence functions, the entanglement of the outgoing beams is proven despite the limitation of low-frequency noise from the dc bias. The agreement between experimental results and theory allows for evaluation of the entropy of entanglement, estimation of entanglement flux, and identification of ways to improve the device's performance as a bright source of entangled microwaves for quantum-technological applications.

Excitonic nature of magnons in a quantum Hall ferromagnet

Summary: Magnons can transfer magnetic moment or spin over long distances. In quantum Hall ferromagnets, it is predicted that spin and charge are entangled, resulting in magnons carrying an electric dipole moment. Evidence of this electric dipole moment is found in a graphene quantum Hall ferromagnet using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, with the magnons affecting interferometer flux and interference pattern phase and visibility. The ability to couple spin degree of freedom to an electrostatic potential in quantum Hall ferromagnets could have implications for spintronics.

Summary: In this paper, we observe the emission of photon bunches by a circuit made of a microwave resonator and a voltage-biased tunable Josephson junction. We show that the emission of photon bunches can be explained quantitatively by treating the system using a rotating-wave approximation. Through experimental measurements, we also determine the Fano factor of the emitted microwave radiation.

Absorptive filters for quantum circuits: Efficient fabrication and cryogenic power handling

Alexandre Paquette, Joel Griesmar, Gabriel Lavoie, Romain Albert, Florian Blanchet, Alexander Grimm, Ulrich Martel, Max Hofheinz

Summary: An efficient fabrication method for absorptive microwave filters based on Eccosorb CR-124 is presented. The filters are made from readily available parts and their cutoff frequency can be adjusted by their length. These filters exhibit desirable properties such as a wide stop band with high rejection and low return loss, as well as an error-function shaped step response without overshoot. Measurements at low temperatures show that the filters thermally stabilize quickly and can absorb high power while maintaining low noise temperature. Therefore, they are ideal for cryogenic filtering and filtering of intermediate frequency port signals of mixers.
