Angular distributions (ADs) of O(+) fragments from C 1s photoexcited CO detected in coincidence with carbon KVV Auger electrons emitted in the horizontal direction were measured at photon energies of 298, 305, 320, and 450 eV. At 450 eV, the ADs are polarization-independent and coincide with the molecular-frame Auger electron angular distribution. All measured ADs can be rationalized as a product of the same molecular-frame Auger electron angular distribution and the axial selectivity in the photoionization process. Thus the interaction between the photoelectron and the Auger electron for the normal Auger decay of CO can be neglected, and the two-step model is a good approximation.

Suppression of thermal nanoplasma emission in clusters strongly ionized by hard x-rays

Yoshiaki Kumagai, Zoltan Jurek, Weiqing Xu, Vikrant Saxena, Hironobu Fukuzawa, Koji Motomura, Denys Iablonskyi, Kiyonobu Nagaya, Shin-ichi Wada, Yuta Ito, Tsukasa Takanashi, Shuhei Yamada, Yuta Sakakibara, Toshiyuki Nishiyama Hiraki, Takayuki Umemoto, Minna Patanen, John D. Summary: This study investigated the electron and nuclear dynamics in krypton clusters using electron and ion spectroscopy, revealing the formation of a nanoplasma after core ionization by X-ray photons. The results showed that while the ion data exhibited expected features, the electron emission spectra did not show the expected pump-probe delay-dependent enhancement, except for a slight enhancement in the energy range below 2 eV. Theoretical simulations indicated that thermal emission from the transient nanoplasma was quenched due to the deep trapping potential of the ions during long-time expansion and electron-ion recombination.

High valence states of Pd supported on ferroelectric BaTiO3 driven by electric polarization

Tasuku Yoshida, Jun Kano, Masaichiro Mizumaki, Yusuke Tamenori, Kiyofumi Nitta, Kazuo Kato, Satoshi Hinokuma, Norihiro Oshime, Satoshi Hirose, Hitoshi Mikami, Naoshi Ikeda, Tatsuo Fujii, Yuta Nishina, Tomoko Okubo

Summary: The electric polarization of ferroelectric material can influence the electronic structure of neighboring metal atoms, as demonstrated by the shift in valence state of Pd to 4+ at a metal-ferroelectric junction. This study also revealed the formation of Pd4+ states on the surface of Pd oxide nanoparticles due to the atomic displacement caused by the electric field. It suggests the potential use of ferroelectric support effect in producing a new type of catalyst.

Summary: The study successfully deduced the molecule's orientation and photoelectron emission direction in methyloxirane, achieving a fourfold differential PECD beyond 50%. This strong chiral asymmetry was reproduced by ab initio electronic structure calculations, indicating the potential of PECD as a sensitive tool for chiral recognition in the gas phase.

Lattice Oxygen Instability in Oxide-Based Intercalation Cathodes: A Case Study of Layered LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2

Xueyan Hou, Kento Ohta, Yuta Kimura, Yusuke Tamenori, Kazuki Tsuruta, Koji Amezawa, Takashi Nakamura

Summary: The lattice oxygen stability of oxide-based cathode materials is crucial for the performance of secondary batteries. This study investigates the oxygen release behavior in layered rock-salt LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2-δ, revealing that factors such as high valent Ni and Li''TM aggravate oxygen release, leading to structural deterioration. The findings provide new research directions and guidelines for stabilizing lattice oxygen in oxide-based intercalation cathodes.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of oxygen release in Li-ion battery cathodes through experimental evaluation and theoretical analysis. The results show a significant difference in the energy required for oxygen release between Ni3+ and Co3+ reduction. The approach used in this study allows for the quantitative evaluation of oxygen lattice stability in oxide-based battery materials, providing valuable guidance for the development of high-energy-density and robust batteries.

Visualization of Sulfur Chemical State of Cathode Active Materials for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries by Tender X-ray Spectroscopic Ptychography

Masaki Abe, Fusae Kaneko, Nozomu Ishiguro, Tatsuya Kubo, Fumiya Chujo, Yusuke Tamenori, Hiroyuki Kishimoto, Yukio Takahashi

Summary: In this study, the visualization of the sulfur chemical state of cathode active materials was achieved using tender X-ray spectroscopic ptychography. The results showed that the sulfur chemical states in the samples were heterogeneous and changed during the charge/discharge processes. The cathode composites also accumulated sulfur oxides, possibly due to side reactions between sulfur and the electrolyte.

Revisiting Cationic Doping Impacts in Ni-Rich Cathodes

Xueyan Hou, Takuya Katsumata, Yuta Kimura, Yusuke Tamenori, Kiyofumi Nitta, Hirona Yamagishi, Koji Amezawa, Takashi Nakamura

Summary: As a promising cathode material for high-energy-density Li-ion batteries, the Ni-rich layered oxide cathode active chemical performance degrades rapidly upon charge/discharge cycles probably due to electrochemical/thermochemical instabilities. Cationic doping has been regarded as an effective strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance. In this study, the impact of cationic doping on the electrochemical performance and lattice oxygen stability was quantitatively assessed.

Summary: This study investigates the fragmentation dynamics of 1-iodopropane and 2-iodopropane after interaction with intense femtosecond laser pulses using experimental ion imaging. The resulting polycation fragments are analyzed using covariance imaging analysis, and contributions from three-body concerted and sequential fragmentation mechanisms are isolated. The angular distribution of the fragment ions is found to be more complex than previous studies, and differs significantly between the two isomeric species. Detailed physical insights into the fragmentation dynamics are obtained through simulations and analysis of the dissociation channels of interest.

Summary: High Fe concentration wurtzite AlN films were deposited on Si(100) substrates using radio-frequency sputtering, with growth process investigated.
