Modifications of general relativity provide an alternative explanation to dark energy for the observed acceleration of the universe. We calculate quasilinear effects in the growth of structure in f(R) models of gravity using perturbation theory. We find significant deviations in the bispectrum that depend on cosmic time, length scale and triangle shape. However the deviations in the reduced bispectrum Q for f(R) models are at the percent level, much smaller than the deviations in the bispectrum itself. This implies that three-point correlations can be predicted to a good approximation simply by using the modified linear growth factor in the standard gravity formalism. Our results suggest that gravitational clustering in the weakly nonlinear regime is not fundamentally altered, at least for a class of gravity theories that are well described in the Newtonian regime by the parameters G(eff) and Phi/Psi. This approximate universality was also seen in the N-body simulation measurements of the power spectrum by Stabenau & Jain (2006), and in other recent studies based on simulations. Thus predictions for such modified gravity models in the regime relevant to large-scale structure observations may be less daunting than expected on first principles. We discuss the many caveats that apply to such predictions.

Summary: Recent cosmic shear studies have reported discrepancies on the parameter S-8 between shear power spectra and two-point correlation functions. The methodology for determining matching scale cuts is key, with correlation coefficients of posterior means ranging from over 80 percent to 10 percent for different scale cuts. Systematic uncertainties affect the two statistics similarly, with the largest biases from intrinsic alignment and baryonic feedback.

Novel Probes Project: Tests of gravity on astrophysical scales

Tessa Baker, Alexandre Barreira, Harry Desmond, Pedro Ferreira, Bhuvnesh Jain, Kazuya Koyama, Baojiu Li, Lucas Lombriser, Andrina Nicola, Jeremy Sakstein, Fabian Schmidt

Summary: The Novel Probes Project aims to advance the field of astrophysical tests of the dark sector by connecting observers and theorists. This review focuses on tests of gravity in the weak-field regime, ranging from stars to quasilinear cosmological scales, and complements strong-field tests of gravity as well as background and linear probes in cosmology. It discusses the potential and challenges of using astrophysical probes for tests of gravity, with a focus on nonlinear dynamics and screening mechanisms in modified-gravity models.

Summary: This study presents measurements of radial profiles of mass and galaxy number density around Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ)-selected clusters using both weak lensing and galaxy counts. The splashback feature is detected at a consistent location in both mass and galaxy profiles, and the Diemer & Kravtsov model is extended to the linear regime with good matching to the measured profiles. The shapes of galaxy and lensing profiles are remarkably similar for the sample across different scales.

Summary: Lensing without borders is a cross-survey collaboration aimed at assessing the consistency of galaxy-galaxy lensing signals across different data sets and testing systematic errors. The study compares the amplitude of Delta sigma using lens samples from different surveys and finds good agreement between empirically estimated and reported systematic errors. A correlation between lensing amplitude and survey depth is detected in some lenses, possibly due to unrecognized galaxy blends and imperfections in photometric redshift calibration. The analysis suggests that lensing systematics alone are unlikely to fully explain the 'lensing is low' effect.

Summary: This study presents cosmological constraints from the analysis of angular power spectra of cosmic shear maps based on the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y3) data. The analysis using the pseudo-Ct method complements the analysis of two-point correlation functions in real space and provides an important cross-check. The results show a slightly higher S-8 value compared to the expected statistical fluctuations and are in agreement with other DES Y3 analyses.

Summary: This study uses data from Dark Energy Survey (DES) year-3 to constrain cosmological parameters and galaxy-bias parameters. The analysis combines measurements of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing. The study finds inconsistencies between the galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements, likely due to systematic measurement errors. By changing the selection criteria for the galaxy sample, the study obtains more consistent results.

Summary: In this study, we present tomographic measurements and validation tests of the cross-correlation between galaxy shear and tSZ effect. We find evidence for reduced pressure in low-mass halos, consistent with predictions for the effects of feedback from active Galactic nuclei. Our measurements also suggest a nonzero redshift evolution of the hydrostatic mass bias, which can explain the mass bias necessary to reconcile cluster count measurements with the Planck-preferred cosmology.
