Simultaneous deorientation and lifetime measurement in 98Ru using the recoil distance Doppler shift method in inverse Coulomb excitation

We measured the lifetimes of the 2(1,2)(+) and 4(1)(+) states in Ru-98 in order to reduce their uncertainties and resolve the discrepancies in the literature for the lifetime of the 4(1)(+) state. Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics was used to populate excited states in Ru-98, and the recoil distance doppler shift (RDDS) method was employed using the nNew Yale plunger device (NYPD). This technique combined with inverse Coulomb excitation requires several corrections due to relativistic and deorientation effects but yields high precision lifetimes. The determined B-4/2 = B(4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+))/B(2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) = 1.86(16) agrees well with the vibrational limit. In order to analyze the data, a new method for the deorientation correction of RDDS data was developed using the perturbation of experimental angular correlations. The simultaneous measurement of deorientation and lifetime of a given state and its application are discussed. The method is suitable for radioactive beam experiments.

Summary: Gamma decays in Ca-56 and Ca-58 were observed following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions. The transitions were tentatively assigned as the 2(1)(+) -> 0(gs)(+) decays and compared to results from ab initio and conventional shell-model approaches. A new nuclear shell above the N=34 shell was confirmed, indicating a potential extension of the dripline of Ca isotopes.

Summary: More than 200 states up to 4.1 MeV excitation have been observed in 168Er with the 170Er(p, t) reaction at 25 MeV incident energy. A multistep coupled-channels analysis has been conducted for all the states to determine their spin and parity values, leading to the assignment of more than 100 newly determined values. The results show good agreement with previously reported values in the ENSDF database, making 168Er a well-known nucleus for low and medium spin states.

Summary: In this study, the lifetimes of the low-lying yrast states 2+, 4+, and 6+ of the unstable nucleus 182Os were measured using digital fast-timing techniques. The lifetimes of the 4+ and 6+ states were determined for the first time. The discrepancy between two inconsistent literature values was evaluated by taking into account the remeasured value for the lifetime of the 2+1 state.

Summary: Nuclei near 78Ni are significant for studying nuclear structure and changes in shell structure away from stability. For the first time, spectroscopy of the odd-odd isotope 78Cu was conducted using the EURICA setup at RIKEN Nishina Center. Excited states in the neutron-rich isotope were observed after beta decay of 78Ni produced through in-flight fission.

Summary: Nuclear fission is a complex physical process with macroscopic and microscopic nuclear properties playing a role in determining the outcome. The presence of nuclear dissipation has a significant impact on the process, but it is poorly understood due to different theoretical interpretations and limited experimental data. This study presents the first experimental determination of dissipation energy in fission, revealing the influence of particular nuclear shells on dissipation and fission dynamics.

Summary: The PANDORA project aims to study photonuclear reactions of light nuclei below a mass of A = 60 through experimental and theoretical research. Two experimental methods, virtual photon excitation and real photo absorption, will be used to measure photoabsorption cross sections and decay branching ratio as a function of photon energy. Various nuclear models will be employed to predict photonuclear reactions and evaluate uncertainty based on discrepancies between predictions and experimental data. The results will be implemented in the reaction calculation code TALYS for simulating the photo-disintegration process of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in inter-galactic propagation.

Summary: The rapid shape transition observed in the A approximate to 100 mass region, particularly in Zr isotopes, has attracted special interest. In this study, the lifetimes of low-lying excited states in 99Zr and 99Nb nuclei were determined using fast-timing techniques and experimental setup. The experimental values were compared to calculations from the interacting boson-fermion model and discussed in the context of shape coexistence.

Summary: This paper presents the design, prototype developments, and test results of a new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) used in the R-3 B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR in Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector can detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with high relative energy and time precision, allowing for the full identification of relativistic ions from hydrogen up to uranium in mass and nuclear charge.

New aspects of the low-energy structure of 211At

Summary: The lifetimes of low-energy states in the semimagic nucleus 211At were measured and compared to shell-model calculations. It was found that one of the calculations overestimated certain ground-state transition probabilities and underestimated the E2 strengths involving a specific state. However, modifying a matrix element in the calculation improved the agreement with experimental data significantly. The calculations in the single-j approximation showed good agreement with the measured transition probabilities, suggesting that seniority can be considered a good quantum number in 211At.

Summary: The average number of protons and neutrons in the primary fission fragments at scission is determined for 16 fissioning isotopes. The research confirms that the main asymmetric fission mode near heavy uranium isotopes is characterized by an average atomic number around 54 in the heavy fission fragments. However, it also shows a stabilization effect in the light fission fragments around 52-54 neutrons in the neutron-deficient thorium and actinium isotopes, indicating the significance of the deformed proton and neutron shell closures around 54 in the nuclear fission process.

Summary: The HISPEC-DESPEC collaboration focuses on investigating the structure of exotic nuclei formed in fragmentation reactions through decay spectroscopy measurements. Summary: Lifetime measurements of low-lying states in the semimagic nucleus Ru-94 were conducted using a fast timing detector array. The experiment revealed unexpected enhancements and prohibitive transitions, which provided stringent tests for nucleon-nucleon interactions employed in theoretical model calculations.
