A theoretical approach based on a deformed quasiparticle random phase approximation built on a Skyrme self-consistent mean field is used to describe the recent measurements of the Gamow-Teller GT(-) strength distribution extracted from the charge-exchange reaction Ge-76(He-3, t)As-76 with high energy resolution. The same analysis is made to describe the Gamow-Teller GT(+) strength distribution measured in the Se-76(d, He-2)As-76 reaction. Combining these two branches, the nuclear matrix element for the two-neutrino double-beta decay process is evaluated and compared to experiment. The role of the nuclear deformation on those processes is emphasized and analyzed.

Summary: The beta-decay of the even-even nucleus Kr-70 with Z=N+2 was investigated, and fifteen gamma-rays associated with the beta-decay were identified for the first time. The half-life of Kr-70 and the beta-delayed proton emission probability were determined with increased precision. The study observed an increase in the beta-strength to the yrast 1(+) state, indicating potential increased np correlations in the T=0 channel.

Quadrupole deformation signatures in elastic electron scattering from oriented odd-A nuclei

P. Sarriguren

Summary: Elastic electron scattering from oriented odd -A axially deformed nuclei is studied in the plane-wave Born approximation. The interference form factors between monopole and quadrupole Coulomb terms that characterize the nuclear response with aligned nuclear targets are shown to increase or decrease the unpolarized cross-section, depending on the sign of the quadrupole deformation. This feature provides valuable information on the nuclear deformation that can be used as a signature of the oblate or prolate character of the nuclear shape. Some selected cases of nuclei with different spins are presented that exemplify the scope of the method.

Summary: Small-angle differential cross sections of proton elastic scattering off 78Kr with a collision energy of 152.7 MeV/u were measured using the Glauber model at HIRFL-CSR. A model-dependent root-mean-square matter radius of 4.16(12) fm for the 78Kr nucleus was deduced, slightly larger than the proton radius of 4.13 fm for 78Kr. However, considering the relatively large radius error of 78Kr, the difference is not statistically significant and further experiments are necessary.

Bulk and decay properties of neutron-deficient odd-mass Hg isotopes near A=185

O. Moreno, P. Sarriguren, A. Algora, L. M. Fraile, S. E. A. Orrigo

Summary: This study describes the ground and isomeric states of the neutron-deficient odd-A isotopes 183Hg, 185Hg, and 187Hg using a microscopic calculation based on a self-consistent, axially deformed Hartree-Fock mean field with the Skyrme functional and pairing within BCS approximation. The results on mean-square charge radii and magnetic dipole moments for different odd-neutron states and equilibrium shapes are analyzed in terms of their sensitivity to nuclear deformation, spin, and parity. Additionally, spin-isospin correlations are introduced to obtain the distributions of Gamow-Teller strength and the beta+/EC half-lives of these isotopes.

Competition between weak and α-decay modes in superheavy nuclei

P. Sarriguren

Summary: The competition between alpha- and beta(+) /EC-decay modes in superheavy nuclei synthesis is systematically studied. The alpha decay is found to be the dominant decay mode in most cases, but there are interesting instances where the half-lives of both modes are comparable, indicating the possibility of new pathways to more neutron-rich nuclei in this region.

Nuclear symmetry energy components and their ratio: A new approach within the coherent density fluctuation model

M. K. Gaidarov, E. Moya de Guerra, A. N. Antonov, I. C. Danchev, P. Sarriguren, D. N. Kadrev

Summary: A new alternative approach is proposed to calculate the ratio of the surface to volume components of the nuclear symmetry energy within the coherent density fluctuation model (CDFM). This new expression, scheme II, is found to be more direct and physically motivated than the previous expression (scheme I). By comparing results with empirical data, scheme II leads to more realistic values and exhibits conceptual and operational advantages over scheme I.
