The stellar reaction Si-26(p,gamma) P-27 was studied in the Coulomb dissociation of P-27. Two known resonance levels in P-27 were excited and a candidate for the third excited state was found in the Si-26 p relative energy spectrum. The E2 resonance strengths omega gamma were obtained to be (6.5 +/- 1.3) x 10(-11), (6.0 +/- 1.1) x 10(-10), and (1.10 +/- 0.27) x 10(-10) MeV. The total (E2 + M1)omega gamma value for the first excited state was evaluated to be 1.9(-1.1)(+1.9) x 10(-9) MeV with the help of the shell model. The error was estimated from the deviation of theoretical predictions with the same shell model from experimental strengths obtained in the present study for P-27 and earlier ones for the mirror nucleus Mg-27. The astrophysical reaction rate for the Si-26(p,gamma) P-27 reaction was also calculated and compared with previous estimations.

Summary: We report on the first proton-induced single proton- and neutron-removal reactions from the neutron-deficient 14O nucleus with large Fermi-surface asymmetry Sn - Sp 1/4 18.6 MeV at similar to 100 MeV/nucleon, a widely used energy regime for rare-isotope studies. The measured inclusive cross sections and parallel momentum distributions of the 13N and 13O residues are compared to the state-of-the-art reaction models, with nuclear structure inputs from many-body shell-model calculations. Our results provide the first quantitative contributions of multiple reaction mechanisms including the quasifree knockout, inelastic scattering, and nucleon transfer processes. It is shown that the inelastic scattering and nucleon transfer are important tools for investigating single-particle strengths and correlations in atomic nuclei.

Summary: Subjecting a physical system to extreme conditions is a common method to gain a better understanding of its organization and structure. The investigation of isotopes with different neutron-to-proton ratios than stable nuclei is an important test for nuclear-structure theories. This study reports the first observation of the decay of O-28 and 27O isotopes and compares their decay energies with theoretical models. The results have implications for the understanding of nuclear structure.

Summary: The ONOKORO project aims to uncover the formation mechanism of clusters in atomic nuclei and is developing a new detector array for measuring energies and angles of light ions emitted in the reactions. The silicon tracker shows good resolution in tracking particles with regards to angular and energy-loss. Performance tests on prototype silicon detectors with 100 μm thickness and strip width were conducted, producing energy-loss spectra with a good signal-to-noise ratio. The detectors have optimized dynamic ranges to detect Z = 1 and Z = 2 ions emitted in cluster-knockout reactions.

The γ-process nucleosynthesis in core-collapse supernovae

Lorenzo Roberti, Marco Pignatari, Maria Lugaro, Zsolt Fulop, Gyorgy Gyurky

Summary: Neutron-capture processes produce most heavy elements in the Solar System, but cannot create rare proton-rich stable isotopes. The gamma-process, a chain of photodisintegrations, is recognized as a feasible way to synthesize these isotopes in core collapse supernovae. However, there are discrepancies between theory and observations in this scenario. In this study, we aim to explore the gamma-process in more detail using different CCSNe models and up-to-date nuclear reaction rates. Our preliminary analysis focuses on identifying the gamma-process sites and studying progenitors of CCSNe that undergo a carbon-oxygen shell merger before the collapse of the iron core.

The study of the 20Ne(p,γ)21Na reaction at LUNA

Sandra Zavatarelli, Eliana Masha

Summary: The NeNa and MgAl cycles have attracted much experimental activity in the past decade due to their role in synthesizing Ne, Na, and Mg isotopes during H burning in various astrophysical scenarios. These cycles are also believed to be responsible for the observed anti-correlations in O-Na and Al-Mg abundances in Galactic globular cluster stars. The first reaction in the NeNa cycle, Ne-20(p,gamma)Na-21, is the bottleneck and controls the speed of the entire cycle due to its slow reaction rate. The LUNA collaboration has initiated a new experimental effort to study the 366 keV resonance and improve the understanding of the cross section at proton energies below 400 keV.

Summary: In this study, the external capture contribution of the He-3(alpha, gamma)Be-7 reaction was measured indirectly using the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) technique. The angular distributions of deuterons emitted in the Li-6(He-3,d)Be-7 alpha-transfer reactions were measured and the ANCs were extracted from the scaling of distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) and coupled-channel (CC) calculations. The astrophysical S-factor for the He-3(alpha, gamma)Be-7 reaction was calculated assuming E1 direct capture and the zero energy value was found to be 0.534 +/- 0.025 keVb. The experimental and theoretical approaches were validated through the analysis of the Li-6(p,gamma)Be-7 astrophysical factor, and have important astrophysical applications in understanding the primordial lithium problem.

LUNA measurement found no evidence of a low-energy resonance in 6Li(p,γ)7Be reaction

D. Piatti

Summary: The Li-6(p,gamma)Be-7 reaction plays important roles in three nucleosynthesis scenarios. However, the trend of Li-6(p,gamma)Be-7 S-factor at astrophysical energies was poorly constrained due to conflicting experimental results. A recent direct measurement found a resonance-like structure, but it has not been confirmed by other measurements or theoretical calculations. A new experiment at LUNA was conducted to clarify the existence of this resonance, and the results showed no evidence for it. These findings were supported by an indirect determination and a theoretical study.

Towards a direct measurement of the 17O(p, γ)18F 65 keV resonance strength at LUNA

D. Piatti, G. F. Ciani

Summary: The O-17(p,gamma)F-18 reaction is important for hydrogen burning in various stellar scenarios. The 65 keV resonance, which contributes significantly to the astrophysical reaction rate, is poorly constrained and only determined through indirect measurements. The LUNA collaboration has developed a high sensitivity setup at the underground location of the LUNA facility to overcome the challenges of directly measuring this resonance.

Summary: The beta decay of 142Te90 to 142I89 was investigated for the first time. The parent nucleus was produced by the in-flight fission of a 238U beam with an energy of 345 MeV per nucleon, impinging on a 9Be target at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN. Excited states in 142I were established by beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy. The (1+) states in 142I were found to be predominantly formed by a Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron and a proton in specific orbitals.
