Transformation optics (TO) has recently become a useful methodology in the design of unusual optical devices, such as novel metamaterial lenses and invisibility cloaks. Very recently Danner et al. [Nat. Photon. 5, 357 (2011)] have suggested theoretical extension of this approach to birefrigent TO devices, which perform useful and different functions for mutually orthogonal polarization states of light. Theoretical designs which operate as an invisibility cloak for one polarization while behaving as a Luneburg lens for another orthogonal polarization have been suggested. Here we report an experimental realization of similar birefrigent TO designs based on lithographically defined metal/dielectric waveguides. Adiabatic variations of the waveguide shape enable control of the effective refractive indices experienced by the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes propagating inside the waveguides. We have studied wavelength and polarization dependent performance of the resulting birefrigent TO devices. These optical devices considerably extend our ability to control light on submicrometer scales. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.075406

Gradient-index nanophotonics

Igor I. Smolyaninov

Summary: A new type of low-loss surface electromagnetic wave can propagate in a lossy medium if the permittivity of the medium changes continuously along a planar surface, with potential applications in super-resolution microscopy and nanolithography. Different from plasmonics-based nanophotonic devices, the new class of surface waves can be supported by a wider range of lossy media like graphite and silicon, particularly suitable for UV nanophotonics applications. The results obtained have broad applicability across the electromagnetic spectrum, including efficient underwater radio communication and imaging using long-range surface electromagnetic radio waves.

Effect of Fast Scale Factor Fluctuations on Cosmological Evolution

Igor I. Smolyaninov

Summary: This paper examines the corrections to the Friedmann equations caused by fast fluctuations in the universe scale factor, which have been proposed as a potential solution to the cosmological constant problem. These fluctuations can also induce significant changes to the average cosmological force, potentially explaining modifications in Newtonian dynamics in galaxy-scale systems. Additionally, quantum fluctuations in the scale factor can lead to considerable modifications in cosmological evolution, including late-time accelerated expansion of the universe and changes in the effective universe potential.

Analogue Quantum Gravity in Hyperbolic Metamaterials

Summary: This study demonstrates the similarity between sound waves and gravitational waves in hyperbolic metamaterials, as well as the similarity between phonons and gravitons. Near phase transitions in these metamaterials, quantum gravity effects can be switched on or off. Additionally, it is predicted that there will be a strong enhancement of sonoluminescence in ferrofluid-based hyperbolic metamaterials, resembling particle creation in strong gravitational fields.

Surface Electromagnetic Waves at Seawater-Air and Seawater-Seafloor Interfaces

Igor I. Smolyaninov, Quirino Balzano, Alexander B. Kozyrev

Summary: Underwater radio communication using surface electromagnetic waves propagating along the seawater-air and seawater-sea floor interfaces is a promising alternative to acoustic communication underwater. The properties of TE and TM polarized surface electromagnetic waves are analyzed and computed in detail. The resulting surface waves have longer propagation ranges compared to bulk propagation in the lossy media. The ability of carrying broadband radio signals over practical communication distances underwater is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally, where a 50 MHz radio signal was successfully transmitted over a 7 m distance along the sandy seabed.
