Summary: This study investigated a commercial photopolymer mixture using positron annihilation spectroscopy (PALS), near infrared spectroscopy (NIR), and bulk density measurements to study microstructural free volume, which affects material properties. It was found that 0.5 mol% of photoinitiator (PI) is sufficient to achieve similar microstructures for 2 mm and 5 mm-thick samples. The thickness and amount of PI were found to have an impact on the free volume characteristics, which correlated with bulk density, monomer conversion, and H bonded interactions determined from NIR. Spatial graded microstructural study revealed more pronounced differences with increased PI amount and reduced thickness.

Summary: The pore structure of PEI/SBA-15 nanocomposites was investigated using PALS, TEM, XRD, and N2 adsorption and desorption techniques. The results showed that PALS could provide information about the micropores and mesopores in the SBA-15 matrix. The size of the micropores and mesopores obtained from theoretical models was slightly smaller than that obtained from N2 adsorption and desorption techniques due to the presence of open micropores in the channels. This study provides a unique tool for understanding the evolution of nanometer-sized pores and the relationship between the material structure and CO2 adsorption capacity.

Summary: The binding between vacancies and Mg atoms in aluminum solid solution plays a crucial role in the age hardening of Al alloys. This study investigates the reversion process of natural aging in an Al-Mg alloy through in situ positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The process involves the reduction of vacancy-Mg complexes and subsequent dissolution of agglomerated vacancies during heating. The evolution of the alloy during heating is analyzed using high-count-rate positron annihilation spectroscopy to identify defect-related components.

Summary: This study investigated the corrosion process of MgSi nano-precipitates in an Al-Mg-Si alloy using transmission electron microscopy. It was found that coarsened beta' precipitates in the over-aged state were corroded through dissolution of Mg and oxidation of Si, transforming into amorphous SiO2 precipitates. This newly discovered crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation plays a role in intragranular corrosion behavior, explaining the reduced susceptibility of over-aged Al-Mg-Si alloys to pitting and intergranular corrosion.

Summary: The effect of Ge addition on the delaying natural aging of Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy was investigated. It was found that Ge addition suppressed the natural aging kinetics and cluster size. Atom probe tomography revealed that Ge refinement of cluster evolution was achieved by disturbing the magnesium enrichment of silicon-silicon clusters and enhancing vacancy trapping. Ge segregation at the cluster interface was also considered as a potential barrier to cluster growth.

Summary: The microstructure and properties changes of industrial aluminum alloy after natural aging and reverse aging were studied. The results showed that the clusters formed during reverse aging process could increase hardness and tensile strength, and with longer reverse aging time, the clusters would grow and form strengthening precipitates.

Summary: Discontinuous precipitation (DP) is a common mechanism for solid solution decomposition, resulting in the formation of precipitate layers and solute depleted matrix along a moving boundary. The morphology of DP regions is highly complex, and the behavior of dislocations and twins within such structures during deformation is not well understood. A 3-dimensional (3D) analysis is necessary to reveal the true morphology of DP. This study presents the first 3D investigation of DP using a novel PFIB based serial sectioning method. The AZ80 alloy studied exhibits an interconnected network of DP regions within a connected matrix, with varying widths of DP regions.

Summary: The addition of Sn in Al-Mg-Si alloys has a significant impact on the hardness and microstructure of the alloy. Proper Sn content can promote the precipitation of beta '' phase, while excessive Sn content can lead to uneven distribution of beta '' phases, reducing the mechanical properties of the alloy.

Summary: The research found that the combination of natural aging and pre-aging followed by wire drawing and post-aging can improve the strength and electrical conductivity of the Al-Mg-Si AA6201 conductor alloys. Samples with natural aging exhibited a higher density of precipitates in the drawn and post-aged conditions, providing a better combination of strength and EC.

Summary: Experimental tracking of the isothermal aging response at 170 degrees C of three extruded Al-Mg-Si alloys revealed the influence of Mg + Si content and the Mg/Si ratio on microstructure and mechanical behavior. High Mg + Si content increased the number density of beta precipitates, while a higher Mg/Si ratio decreased the size of beta precipitates in the peak-aged condition. It was observed that coarsening of beta precipitates primarily occurred along its length in the overaged condition.

Summary: This study introduces new alloys that combine the age-hardening capability of Al-Mg-Si alloys with the microstructure-controlling effect on processing of primary Fe-rich intermetallic phases used in foil stock. Processing and microstructure-property relations in new crossover aluminum alloys derived from 6xxx and 8xxx foil stock alloys are shown. The study demonstrates the attractive combinations of strength and ductility achieved in these new alloys.

Summary: Lithium extraction from brine and ores can harm the environment due to the use of large amounts of chemicals and waste discharge. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based membranes are a promising solution for lithium extraction with their uniform pore sizes, high porosity, and rich chemistry. Recent advances in polycrystalline MOF membranes, mixed matrix membranes, and MOF channel membranes for lithium-ion separation have been discussed, pointing towards future opportunities and challenges in this emerging research field.

Summary: The combined effects of Sn addition and pre-ageing on the natural secondary ageing and subsequent artificial ageing of AA6014 alloy were investigated. It was found that pre-ageing can suppress natural secondary ageing and improve the artificial ageing hardening kinetics and response. In the case of Sn-added alloy, the effect of pre-ageing can be further improved by natural ageing before pre-ageing at 100℃.
