Summary: Antiferromagnets with non-collinear spin structures have attractive properties for spintronic devices, such as anomalous Hall effect and spin Hall effect. However, these effects can only be observed in a single antiferromagnetic domain state, which requires perturbation of the compensated spin structure through spin canting. This study reveals that spin canting in Mn3SnN and Mn3GaN is induced by structural symmetry lowering caused by large displacements of magnetic manganese atoms.

Summary: The crystal quality of a 6 inch free-standing GaN substrate grown using a Na-flux based liquid phase epitaxy method was demonstrated by recording rocking curve profiles and analyzing lattice plane anisotropic bowing. The competition between crystallinity and homogeneity was observed in the substrate, with a mean rocking curve width of 0.024 degrees indicating almost single crystal quality.

Summary: Multiferroic composites of (1-x)NdMnO3 - (x)BaTiO3 show distinct peaks of orthorhombic NdMnO3 and tetragonal BaTiO3 with improved conducting nature and giant dielectric behavior in NMO-20BT composite. Impedance measurements confirm improved resistivity and thermally activated non-Debye type conduction behavior in NMO-BT composites. Enhanced remnant magnetization and improved magnetoelectric coupling due to lattice stability establish multiferroism in NMO-BT composites.

Summary: In-house X-ray powder diffraction was used to study the room-temperature structural evolution of orthochromate RECrO3 (RE = Y, Eu-Lu) single crystals grown by the floating-zone method with a laser-diode furnace. An anomaly in the evolution of lattice parameters was found in the LuCrO3 single crystal, possibly due to the loss of both spin and orbital angular moments of Lu3+ ions leading to the disappearance of magnetostriction effect. The evolution of Bragg (0 2 0), (1 1 2), (2 0 0), and (0 2 1) peaks was monitored, showing regular variations with rare-earth ionic radius indicating changes in lattice constants.

Summary: We used X-ray diffraction imaging (XRDI), X-ray reticulography (XRR), and X-ray topography (XRT) to evaluate the lattice misorientation at domain boundaries (DBs) in beta-Ga2O3. The XRDI maps showed different visibilities of the DBs depending on the applied reciprocal lattice vectors (g-vectors). Analysis of the misorientation characteristics suggested that the investigated DBs had twist and tilt components on the ((10) over bar 05) plane. XRR images in conjunction with simulation were able to separate the twist and tilt components.

Summary: In this study, multiferroic bismuth ferrite was prepared using the sol-gel method and its structural and optical characteristics were examined. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared analysis were used to study the structure, while field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the morphology. The research found that bismuth ferrite has potential importance in applications such as high dielectric constant capacitors and hard disc components.

Summary: The results of Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements reveal the structural characteristics and magnetic phase transition temperature of NdFe3(BO3)(4). The study shows negative thermal expansion and structural anomalies in the crystal cell parameters over a wide temperature range, which are well correlated with the Mossbauer parameters in the paramagnetic state. The magnetic transition from a commensurate to an incommensurate structure in the iron subsystem at a lower temperature is also discussed.

Summary: Elastic micromechanical fields of a nickel-based superalloy polycrystal are tracked using high energy X-ray diffraction microscopy (HEDM) to determine intragranular deformation metrics during cyclic high temperature loading. Results show that elevated temperatures lead to complex interactions among grains, with greater recovery observed at higher temperatures.

Summary: This study investigated the evolution of clusters and atomic coordination in SiOC ceramics pyrolyzed at different temperatures using high energy X-ray diffraction and radial distribution function analysis. It was found that orthorhombic SiO2 converts to growth resistant amorphous SiO2, and cubic b-SiC forms at lower temperatures than previously reported, along with a minor amount of hexagonal SiC. ReaxFF simulation provided direct data on atomic mixing, elemental separation, and the effects of precursor molecular structures and compositions, especially in the early stage of pyrolysis. The simulated radial distribution function data complemented the experimental data, revealing the significant presence of C-H bonds along with Si-O and C-C bonds.

Summary: The effect of grain boundary resistance (G(BR)) and grain resistance (G(R)) on the magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic composite thick films of BiFeO3 (BFO) nanocrystalline powder and poly vinylidene-fluoride (PVDF) polymer is significant. The study shows that grain boundary resistance plays an important role in strengthening the magnetoelectric effect in the BFO-PVDF system, with the BFO50 sample demonstrating promising results for device and sensor applications.

Summary: The crystal structure and magnetic state of the (1 - x)BiFeO3-(x)BiMnO3 solid solution were analyzed. It was found that increasing the dopant concentration led to structural and magnetic transitions at room temperature, resulting in a two-phase structure. Irreversible temperature-driven structural transitions favored the stabilization of high-temperature structural phases.

Summary: The effect of electron doping on the magnetic and lattice parameters of Ca1-xYxMnReO6 compound is investigated. The results show that electron doping significantly enhances the ferromagnetic component of Mn spins, suppresses the antiferromagnetic component, and suppresses the lattice parameter anomalies observed in the parent compound. Electron doping also increases the magnetic ordering temperature.

Summary: Partial substitution of Cd for Zn in Yb-based heavy-fermion material YbFe2Zn20 leads to reductions in specific-heat coefficient gamma and resistivity coefficient A, as well as a decrease in the Kadowaki-Woods ratio A/gamma(2). The Cd substitution introduces light conduction bands with a substantial contribution of Cd 5p levels, coexisting with heavy fermions originating from conduction bands with larger participation of Zn 4p levels strongly coupled with Yb 4f local moments. These findings suggest a complex interplay between light and heavy fermions in the material.
