The minute polar atomic displacements in multiferroics are shown to be within the reach of crystallography. A nonconventional methodology with anomalous x-ray diffraction is employed to investigate such displacements in DyMn2O5 with giant magnetoelectric coupling and two distinct Mn3+ and Mn4+ sites. Intensity differences of a selected Bragg reflection were measured as the direction of electric polarization is switched by a poling field. A significant differential effect, which is strongly enhanced at energies near and above the Mn K edge, was observed near and below the ferroelectric transition temperature, T-c similar to 40 K. The direct participation of ionic displacements in the ferroelectric polarization, particularly the Mn3+ sublattice, is demonstrated, dismissing a purely electronic mechanism for the multiferroicity.

Enhanced magnetism and suppressed magnetoelastic coupling induced by electron doping in Ca1-x Y x MnReO6

Summary: The effect of electron doping on the magnetic and lattice parameters of Ca1-xYxMnReO6 compound is investigated. The results show that electron doping significantly enhances the ferromagnetic component of Mn spins, suppresses the antiferromagnetic component, and suppresses the lattice parameter anomalies observed in the parent compound. Electron doping also increases the magnetic ordering temperature.

Crystal, local atomic, and local electronic structures of YbFe2Zn20-xCdx (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.4): A multiband system with possible coexistence of light and heavy fermions

A. Fahl, R. Grossi, D. Rigitano, M. Cabrera-Baez, M. A. Avila, C. Adriano, E. Granado

Summary: Partial substitution of Cd for Zn in Yb-based heavy-fermion material YbFe2Zn20 leads to reductions in specific-heat coefficient gamma and resistivity coefficient A, as well as a decrease in the Kadowaki-Woods ratio A/gamma(2). The Cd substitution introduces light conduction bands with a substantial contribution of Cd 5p levels, coexisting with heavy fermions originating from conduction bands with larger participation of Zn 4p levels strongly coupled with Yb 4f local moments. These findings suggest a complex interplay between light and heavy fermions in the material.
