Evaluation of different surgical approaches to remove dental implants from the maxillary sinus

Zaid Hamdoon, Nazhat Mahmood, Wael Talaat, Abier Abdul Sattar, Karrar Naeim, Ahmed Qais, Waad Kheder, Waseem Jerjes

Summary: Surgical removal of displaced dental implants from the maxillary sinus requires appropriate surgical approach based on the location of the implant and the surrounding vital anatomical structures. Different levels of surgical challenges may be encountered during the removal, with more difficulties when dealing with implants located near the floor of the orbit.

In vivo optical coherence tomography in assessment of suspicious facial lesions: A prospective study

Waseem Jerjes, Zaid Hamdoon, Dara Rashed, Abier Abdul Sattar, Colin Hopper

Summary: This study used in vivo optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology to describe the morphologic features of normal and pathologic skin conditions. It found qualitative differences in OCT image features of skin with varying degrees of pathology, and between normal and pathological skin. In vivo OCT shows promise as a useful optical diagnostic technique in diagnosing skin pathologies, with impressive sensitivity and specificity based on this small sample size.

Summary: Root damage after dental implant surgery varies in type and severity, with periodic clinical and radiographical examinations necessary to monitor root resorption, implant integration, and to rule out pulp necrosis.

In vivo optical coherence tomography-guided photodynamic therapy for skin pre-cancer and cancer

Zaid Hamdoon, Waseem Jerjes, Dara Rashed, Sausan Kawas, Abier abdul Sattar, Rani Samsudin, Colin Hopper

Summary: This study demonstrated the technical feasibility of using OCT to map tumor margins and monitor skin changes post-PDT, as well as optimize treatment efficacy. OCT images showed distinct microstructural differences between different skin tissues, providing valuable information for histological analysis of skin lesions.

From Basic Mechanisms to Clinical Research: Photodynamic Therapy Applications in Head and Neck Malignancies and Vascular Anomalies

Daniele Ramsay, Harvey Stevenson, Waseem Jerjes

Summary: Head and neck cancers, largely squamous cell carcinomas, are commonly treated with surgical intervention, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy which may cause damage to healthy tissues. Photodynamic therapy has been shown to be effective in treating head and neck malignancies and vascular tumors without causing harm to underlying structures. Recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of photodynamic therapy compared to traditional treatments with minimal adverse effects.

Quality of life following photodynamic therapy for head and neck pathologies: An exploratory study

Waseem Jerjes, Harvey Stevenson, Daniele Ramsay, Zaid Hamdoon, Colin Hopper

Summary: Healthcare related quality of life is defined as the impact one's health and well-being has on physical, mental, spiritual, and social functions. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is increasingly used for head and neck cancer treatment, with mTHPC-PDT showing improvement in patients' QoL. Pain was the main reported issue post-treatment, but significant improvements in various aspects of life were observed in the weeks following PDT.
