Summary: This population-based study aimed to collect, analyze, and summarize the long-term trends in medical imaging use in Taiwan. The results showed that CT and MRI use has sharply increased in the past two decades, especially in the older age group, but the growth rates have slowed in recent years. The increase in imaging use has been associated with improved clinical outcomes, including higher life expectancy and reduced mortality rates, although further assessment is needed to demonstrate a direct link with imaging.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, people voluntarily reduced their healthcare demand due to fears of contagion or COVID-related precautionary behaviors. The decline in healthcare utilization was greater and more persistent for Influenza-like illness compared to non-ILI, indicating the positive public health externality of prevention measures for COVID-19.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the annual healthcare utilization and costs associated with atopic dermatitis (AD) in Taiwan. The study found that outpatient visits increased with the severity of AD, while there was no consistent pattern in inpatient care and emergency room visits. AD imposes a significant burden of healthcare costs and accounts for a small percentage of Taiwan's national health expenditure and gross domestic product.

Summary: This study presents a methodology to identify suitable CO2 source-sink matching for the deployment of carbon capture utilization technologies in Taiwan. Six clusters of facilities, including major CO2 sources from the power sector and hard-to-abate industries, were identified. Potential CO2 sinks include existing sites, CO2 biofixation from microalgae farming, and CO2 mineralization from alkaline solid wastes. These clusters offer opportunities for carbon and waste reduction, as well as long-term CO2 storage.

Summary: The study found that adolescent suicide victims had a higher proportion of contact with the psychiatric department before death compared to the control group. Within three months before suicide, 18.6% of adolescent suicide victims had only contacted with a psychiatric department. Moreover, cases had higher proportions of contact with non-psychiatric services within three months before suicide, particularly with emergency, surgery, and internal medicine departments. Cases also had higher risks of several psychiatric disorders and physical illnesses compared to controls.

Summary: This study evaluated patterns of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) utilization and clinical features in IBS patients in Taiwan. The findings showed that females were more likely to use TCM for IBS than males. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) was the most commonly used TCM modality, with Jia-wei-xiao-yao-san being the most frequently prescribed Chinese herbal formula and Bai-zhu being the most frequently prescribed single Chinese herb.

Summary: This study used Taiwan's NHIRD to analyze the demographic of inpatient eye care service and found that the mean age of patients in operative and non-operative records was 56 and 44 years, respectively. The sex ratio was 1.3:1 and the average admission duration was 4 days. The average spending per admission was around $1000. The number of inpatient eye services decreased over time, and the major indications for admission were cataract surgery, vitrectomy, scleral buckling, corneal ulcer, glaucoma, and infection.

Summary: This study investigated the factors associated with 1-year medical utilization and mortality in home health care (HHC) and nursing home care (NHC) recipients in Northern Taiwan. The results showed that compared to NHC recipients, HHC recipients had higher utilization of emergency department services and hospital admissions, as well as longer hospital length of stay. Policies should be developed to reduce emergency department and hospital utilization in HHC recipients.

Summary: The study examined the impact of reforms to the Taiwan National Health Insurance copayment scheme in 2005 on the utilization of effective care by patients with persistent asthma. Results showed a significant reduction in effective care utilization over the short-, medium-, and long-term following the policy reforms. The government should develop strategies to protect economically disadvantaged patients.

Summary: A study found that European patients who were prescribed NaSSAs as first-line antidepressant treatment had characteristics such as older age, male gender, unemployment, additional melancholic and catatonic features, inpatient treatment, lower dosages of antidepressants but higher rates of augmentation with low-potency antipsychotics, and greater reductions of depressive symptoms during their current major depressive episodes.

Summary: The prevalence of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in Taiwan has been increasing, resulting in an increase in medical expenditure. Dialysis treatments cost higher than non-dialysis treatments. Outpatient and inpatient costs for ESKD accounted for 10.4%-11.1% and 4.8%-.6% of the entire healthcare system's expenditure, respectively. Circulatory diseases were the leading cause of inpatient costs, with percutaneous coronary intervention having the highest cost.

Summary: This study surveyed the epidemiology and changing ecology of emergency psychiatric services in Taiwan, revealing an increase in female patients, neurosis cases, and suicide/self-harm incidents compared to a report from 1988. These findings point to a need for more services and clinical training to address common mental disorders and suicide in the ED.

Summary: This study uses Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal relationships between abdominal adiposity, measured by waist-hip ratio adjusted for BMI (WHRadjBMI), and cognition. The results suggest that abdominal adiposity impairs cognition, while the effects of BMI on cognition are uncertain.

Summary: The neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia is supported by multi-level impairments shared among schizophrenia and neurodevelopmental disorders. This study investigates the similarities and differences in whole-brain white matter tracts integrity alterations between schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The results show that these disorders have similar deviation patterns at earlier stages, and they cannot be separated using unsupervised machine learning algorithms. Furthermore, the study reveals that schizophrenia, ADHD, and ASD share cognitive dimensions driven by white matter deviations.

Summary: This study explored the long-term employment status and income before and after depression diagnosis among men and women of different working ages in Taiwan. The results showed that individuals with depression had lower employment rates and incomes compared to those without depression before the diagnosis. This gap widened after the diagnosis, with men and older age groups experiencing more significant effects. However, younger age groups showed a greater reduction in employment rates and income in the years following the diagnosis.
