Summary: It is important to provide species with high nutritional value as fresh or processed products for human consumption in order to achieve balanced nutrition. In this study, 15 naturally grown European Cranberry bush (ECB) genotypes were characterized in terms of horticultural characteristics, and it was found that they have significant levels of organic acids, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content. Pomological characteristics were positively correlated with each other, but negatively correlated with chemical properties. Low pH was identified as an important factor for obtaining higher amounts of phytochemicals and strong antioxidant effects.

Summary: Cornus species, including Cornus mas and Cornus officinalis, are widely distributed in Europe, Africa, Asia, and America, and their edible fruits are known for their nutritional and medicinal values. These fruits contain various secondary metabolites with nutritional and functional properties. Although there is limited information available on the phytochemicals and biological activities of Cornus species, their potential for applications in the food industry and traditional medicine is of growing interest.

Summary: Eggplant is a vegetable with high nutritional value and antioxidant content. The levels of carbohydrates, proteins, phenolics, anthocyanins, flavonoids, chlorogenic acid, and antioxidant capacity vary among different cultivars. The cultivars 'EMI' and 'Lagkada' have higher levels of phenolics, anthocyanins, ascorbic acid, caffeoylquinic acid, and antioxidant capacity. Sequence analysis reveals polymorphisms in key regulating genes of the phenylpropanoid pathway. These polymorphisms can potentially be used as molecular markers in eggplant breeding.

Summary: Berries and other foods rich in anthocyanins show anti-obesity effects but their bioactive components and mechanisms are not well understood. An intervention study was conducted on overweight and obese adults to study the effects of different berry components on cellular respiration. Results showed that high-anthocyanin, low-fiber treatment (berry juice) and low-anthocyanin, high-fiber treatment (fiber-enriched gelatin) had opposite effects on cellular respiration.

Summary: This study investigated the copigmentation constant between delphinidin 3-O-glucoside and chlorogenic acid using UV-vis measurements and stopped flow technique. The results showed that the interactions of flavylium cation and quinoidal base with the neutral or the negatively charged forms of the copigment have different geometries. Computational calculations also predicted identical relative order for the binding energies of the four adducts.

Summary: This study compared synthetic juice and fermented juices with three commercial lactic acid bacteria. It found that fermented juice samples had higher levels of phenolics and volatiles, but lower amino acid contents. Juices produced with L. plantarum and L. delbrueckii showed better sensory properties.

Summary: This study evaluated the characteristics and activities of gilaburu vinegar prepared using different methods. Ultrasound treatment showed better enrichment of phenolic compounds and amino acids compared to thermal pasteurization. Gilaburu vinegar was found to be rich in important minerals, and ultrasound treatment increased the iron content. Gilaburu vinegar exhibited antimicrobial and anticancer activities. Therefore, ultrasound treatment is of great significance in terms of the bioactivity and nutritional value of gilaburu vinegar.

Summary: Lonicera caerulaea L. and Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliot fruits are rich in bioactive compounds and have numerous health benefits. L. caerulea has higher antioxidant activity and ascorbic acid level compared to commonly consumed berries like blackberries and strawberries. A. melanocarpa is known for its high antioxidants content, surpassing other fruits like currants, cranberries, blueberries, elderberries, and gooseberries. This review aims to highlight the potential health benefits of these fruits and promote their cultivation and processing as nutraceutical sources.

Summary: A bioequivalence (BE) study is crucial for the registration of oral generic drugs, with the planning influenced by factors such as the linearity of pharmacokinetics. Regulatory requirements for drugs with non-linear pharmacokinetics, like atazanavir and valaciclovir, must be considered in planning BE studies. Differences in tested drug dosages and number of tests performed were found in analysis of protocols and reports of BE studies, highlighting the importance of taking into account all characteristics of the active substance for BE studies of drugs with non-linear pharmacokinetics.
