The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of cover crops and timing of pre-emergence herbicide applications on soybean yield under no-tillage system. The experiment consisted of four cover crops (Panicum maximum, Urochloa ruziziensis, U. brizantha, and pearl millet) and fallow, in addition to four herbicide timings (30, 20, 10, and 0 days before soybean sowing), under no-tillage system (NTS), and of two control treatments under conventional tillage system (CTS). The experimental design was a completely randomized block, in a split-plot arrangement, with three replicates. Soybean under fallow, P. maximum, U. ruziziensis, U. brizantha, and pearl millet in the NTS and soybean under U. brizantha in the CTS did not differ significantly regarding yield. Soybean under fallow in the CTS significantly reduced yield when compared to the other treatments. The amount of straw on soil surface did not significantly affect soybean yield. Chemical management of P. maximum and U. brizantha near the soybean sowing date causes significant damage in soybean yield. However, herbicide timing in fallow, U. ruziziensis, and pearl millet does not affect soybean yield.

Dunite solubilization kinetics in silicon-magnesium fertilization

Luiz Gustavo Moretti, Carlos Alexandre Costa Crusciol, Joao William Bossolani, Ricardo Rossi, Adonis Moreira

Summary: This study investigated the solubilization kinetics of dunite in different tropical soils, showing that it can provide magnesium and silicon while correcting soil acidity. The controlled release method of dunite improves the efficiency of magnesium fertilization and reduces losses from leaching, with a residual effect for subsequent crops.

Acquisition of the physiological quality of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) seeds during maturation under the influence of the maternal environment

Mauricio Hideki Okada, Gustavo Roberto Fonseca de Oliveira, Maria Marcia Pereira Sartori, Carlos Alexandre Costa Crusciol, Joao Nakagawa, Edvaldo Aparecido Amaral da Silva

Summary: The study found that the physiological quality of peanut seeds is predominantly acquired during the development process, reaching its peak between 57 and 76 days after flowering in the late stage of maturation. Additionally, the appropriate proportion of rainfall and thermal sum in the maternal environment were factors that facilitated the acquisition of peanut seed longevity.

Exploring the synergism between surface liming and nitrogen fertilization in no-till system

Carlos Alexandre Costa Crusciol, Joao William Bossolani, Jose Roberto Portugal, Luiz Gustavo Moretti, Letusa Momesso, Murilo de Campos, Nidia Raquel Costa, Marcelo Raphael Volf, Juliano Carlos Calonego, Ciro Antonio Rosolem

Summary: In no-till systems, surface liming to correct soil acidity may not be very effective. However, when combined with urea fertilization, liming can increase the mobility of certain nutrients and improve nitrogen use efficiency of crops.

Potassium-magnesium imbalance causes detrimental effects on growth, starch allocation and Rubisco activity in sugarcane plants

Ariani Garcia, Carlos Alexandre Costa Crusciol, Ciro Antonio Rosolem, Joao William Bossolani, Carlos Antonio Costa Nascimento, James Mabry McCray, Andre Rodrigues dos Reis, Ismail Cakmak

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) in sugarcane plants. The results show that high doses of K significantly interfere with the positive effects of Mg on plant growth, Rubisco activity, and starch accumulation.

Improving soil fertility with lime and phosphogypsum enhances soybean yield and physiological characteristics

Joao William Bossolani, Carlos Alexandre Costa Crusciol, Luiz Gustavo Moretti, Ariani Garcia, Jose Roberto Portugal, Leila Bernart, Rafael Goncalves Vilela, Eduardo Favero Caires, Telmo Jorge Carneiro Amado, Juliano Carlos Calonego, Andre Rodrigues dos Reis

Summary: The study found that applying lime combined with phosphogypsum in tropical no-till systems can improve soil fertility, enhance soybean root growth, and increase plant nutrition and physiological responses, resulting in improved crop resistance to dry spells. These long-term soil amendments also increased the movement of cationic bases and roots in the soil profile, improving soybean nutrition. Moreover, the application of lime and phosphogypsum enhanced carbon and antioxidant metabolism in soybean plants, leading to higher grain yield despite the occurrence of dry spells in the tropical region.

Bacillus subtilis Inoculation Improves Nutrient Uptake and Physiological Activity in Sugarcane under Drought Stress

Mariley de Cassia da Fonseca, Joao William Bossolani, Sirlene Lopes de Oliveira, Luiz Gustavo Moretti, Jose Roberto Portugal, Daniele Scudeletti, Elisa Fidencio de Oliveira, Carlos Alexandre Costa Crusciol

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Bacillus subtilis inoculation on mitigating the negative effects of drought on sugarcane plants. The results showed that inoculation with B. subtilis improved plant nutrition, chlorophyll concentrations, gas exchange parameters, and reduced stress parameters. These improvements resulted in increased root growth, tillering, stalk weight, and higher sucrose concentration in the stalks.

The Influence of Particle Size on the Efficiency of Ni Mining Slag as a Fertilizer

Carlos Vinicius Cavalini Batista de Melo, Luiz Gustavo Moretti, Joao William Bossolani, Letusa Momesso, Murilo de Campos, Jose Roberto Portugal, Juliano Carlos Calonego, Carlos Alexandre Costa Crusciol

Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between particle size of Thermomagnesium (TM) and agronomic efficiency. Positive effects on chlorophyll and leaf sugar concentrations were observed with TM application, while leaf starch concentrations decreased. The grain yield of soybean and maize increased with the application of 100-mesh TM, but there was no impact on the grain yield of the second soybean crop.

Growth-Promoting Effects of Thiamethoxam on Sugarcane Ripened With Sulfometuron-Methyl

Deise de Paula Silva, Lucas Moraes Jacomassi, Josiane Aparecida Viveiros Oliveira, Marcela Pacola Oliveira, Letusa Momesso, Gabriela Ferraz de Siqueira, Rodrigo Foltran, Rogerio Peres Soratto, Leila Luci Dinardo-Miranda, Carlos Alexandre Costa Crusciol

Summary: The use of thiamethoxam and the ripener sulfometuron-methyl can significantly increase the yield and sucrose content of sugarcane. Thiamethoxam, as a bioactivator, promotes new stalk and leaf growth, leading to higher biomass production. Applying both thiamethoxam and sulfometuron-methyl can achieve better results simultaneously.
