Quality assuring early dialysis care: evaluating rates of death and recovery within 90 days of first dialysis using the UK Renal Registry

The Latin American Dialysis and Renal Transplantation Registry: report 2019

Summary: Chronic kidney disease in Latin America is a challenge due to the burden of disease it causes and the difficulty in accessing treatment. Data from the Latin American Dialysis and Renal Transplantation Registry shows a high prevalence of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) patients in the region, but limited access to treatment. Diabetic nephropathy is a major cause of CKD in Latin America. The prevalence and incidence of CKD are positively correlated with the economic development level and life expectancy. Efforts are needed to improve accessibility to treatment and ensure equal access for all patients.

Clinical Trial Emulation by Matching Time-dependent Propensity Scores The Example of Estimating Impact of Kidney Transplantation

Summary: This study used observational data to simulate a clinical trial and evaluate the benefits of kidney transplantation using time-dependent propensity scores. The results showed a significant gain in life expectancy for kidney transplant recipients compared to those on dialysis, supporting transplantation as the best treatment for end-stage renal disease. This simple method could also be considered for estimating the effects of time-dependent exposures.

What data collection methods work best for COVID19 outbreak surveillance for people with end stage kidney disease? An observational cohort study using the UK Renal Registry

Summary: This study compared two methods of data collection for COVID-19 infections among patients on kidney replacement therapy in England. The results showed that direct submission of data by renal centers allowed real-time monitoring for patients undergoing in-center hemodialysis treatment. For other kidney replacement therapy modalities, using a national swab test dataset through frequent linkage may be the most effective method. Optimizing central surveillance can improve patient care by informing interventions and assisting planning at local, regional, and national levels.

The UK Chinese population with kidney failure: Clinical characteristics, management and access to kidney transplantation using 20 years of UK Renal Registry and NHS Blood and Transplant data

Summary: Little is known about the clinical demographics and access to transplantation for Chinese diaspora populations with kidney disease. UK Chinese patients are younger at start of KRT, with higher rates of diabetic kidney disease and glomerulonephritis compared to White patients. UK Chinese men have lower odds of pre-emptive transplant and transplant within 3 years of KRT start, while both UK Chinese men and women have markedly lower odds of LDKT compared to Whites. Understanding these disparities will help ensure equitable access to transplantation.

Improved renal allograft survival for pre-emptive paediatric renal transplant recipients in the UK

Summary: This study found that pre-emptively transplanted children have improved 5-year renal allograft survival compared to children on dialysis at the time of transplantation. Longer time spent on dialysis pre-transplant negatively correlated with renal allograft survival, but short periods of dialysis did not significantly affect renal allograft survival.

Summary: A randomized trial was conducted to compare the effects of standard HD and thermocontrolled HD on structural, functional, and blood flow changes in the heart, brain, and kidneys. The results showed that HD adversely affects cardiac function, arterial blood flow, and kidney volume, but mild dialysate cooling does not change these effects.

Patient perceptions of the challenges of recruitment to a renal randomised trial registry: a pilot questionnaire-based study

Summary: This study aimed to determine the motivators and barriers for patients to join registries for conducting Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs), as well as the information that matters to them when making an enrolment decision. Reasons for participation included personal and altruistic benefits, while barriers included time and travel requirements, data safety concerns, and concerns about impacting current treatment. Although some patients expressed concerns about data storage, the majority were still willing to consent to participate in registries for RCTs.

Treatment practices and outcomes in incident peritoneal dialysis patients: the Swedish Renal Registry 2006-2015

Comorbidities in the UK Primary Sjogren's Syndrome Registry

Static and Dynamic Prediction of Chronic Renal Disease Progression Using Longitudinal Clinical Data from Taiwan's National Prevention Programs

Epidemiology of Aortic Stenosis/Aortic Valve Replacement (from the Nationwide Swedish Renal Registry)

Summary: This study aims to improve the communication of harm outcomes in publications of randomised controlled trials through the development of recommendations for visually presenting harm outcomes. Through a consensus study, experts in clinical trials identified and recommended 10 visualisations, along with a decision tree to assist trialists in choosing appropriate visualisations. Visualisations provide a powerful tool for communicating harm in clinical trials, offering clearer presentation of information and more informative interpretations.
