Assessment of soil quality is important for optimum production and natural resources conservation. Agricultural and pasture soil qualities of Deh-Sorkh region located at south of Mashhad, northeastern Iran were assessed using the integrated quality index (IQI) and Nemero quality index (NQI) models in combination with two datasets, i.e., total data set (TDS) and minimum data set (MDS). In this study 6 soil properties considered as MDS were selected out of 18 properties as TDS using principle component analysis. Soil samples were divided into 3 groups based on optimum ranges of 8 soil physical quality indicators. Soil samples with the most indicators at optimum range were selected as group 1 and the samples having fewer indicators at optimum range were located in groups 2 and 3. Optimum ranges of soil pore size distribution functions were also determined as soil physical quality indices based on 8 soil physical quality indicators. Pore size distribution curves of group 1 were considered as the optimum pore size functions. The results showed that relatively high organic carbon contents could improve pore size distribution. Mean comparisons of soil physical quality indicators demonstrated that mean weight diameter of wet aggregates, structural stability index, the slope of moisture retention curve at inflection point, and plant available water content in agricultural land use decreased significantly in relation to pasture land use. In addition, the results demonstrated that the studied MDS could be a suitable representative of TDS. 78% of pasture soils had the optimum pore size distribution functions, while this parameter for agricultural soils was only 13%. In general, the soils of the studied region showed high limitations for plant growth according to the studied indicators.

Late Pleistocene-Holocene pedogenesis and palaeoclimate in western Asia from palaeosols of the Central Iranian Plateau

Zakieh Rashidi, Alireza Karimi, Andrew Murray, Farhad Khormali, Mohammad Hady Farpoor, Reza Sohbati

Summary: This study examines palaeosols in the Central Iranian Plateau, revealing well-developed reddish-brown palaeoargillic horizons with intensive soil formation processes during the Last Interglacial to Middle Holocene period. Micromorphological and luminescence analyses indicate polygenetic formation in response to alternating wetter and drier phases during this time.

Impacts of soil organic carbon and tillage systems on structural stability as quantified by the high energy moisture characteristic (HEMC) method

Elham Farahani, Hojat Emami, Peyman Keshavarz

Summary: This research evaluated the effects of different tillage systems on soil properties and structural stability in northeastern Iran. The results showed that the no-tillage system had a positive impact on organic carbon content, soil organic carbon stocks, microbial biomass carbon, and aggregate stability. These findings are important for making informed decisions regarding tillage practices and soil conservation.

Effects of tillage systems on soil organic carbon and some soil physical properties

Elham Farahani, Hojat Emami, Majid Forouhar

Summary: Conservation tillage, by increasing soil organic carbon, can improve soil structure, particularly in arid and semiarid regions. The no-till system showed the highest soil organic carbon content and resulted in the highest water-stable and macro-aggregate content. The effects of tillage systems on soil physical properties are strongly dependent on soil organic carbon.

Assessing soil quality of pasture and agriculture land uses in Shandiz county, northwestern Iran

Fariba Samaei, Hojat Emami, Amir Lakzian

Summary: This study compared soil quality indicators in agricultural and pasture land uses and found that pasture land use had higher soil quality indices. The use of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) was effective for assessing soil quality, showing similar results to the Total Data Set (TDS). Agricultural practices were found to decrease soil quality.

Pedogenesis and Distribution of Ni and Cr in an Ultramafic Soil Toposequence under Arid Climate

S. Akbari, A. Karimi, A. Lakzian, A. Ftovat

Summary: This study investigates soil genesis and the distribution of Ni and Cr in soils formed from ultramafic rocks in Northeastern Iran. The results show that the high Ca/Mg ratio in the soils is a result of the presence of carbonates and gypsum with aeolian origin. The release of iron from ferromagnesian minerals contributes to the brown color of the soil. The presence of chlorite reflects the nature of ultramafic rocks, while the high values of Ca/Mg ratio indicate aeolian addition.

Summary: The study examines the soil and landform evolution in Western Afghanistan, specifically the Herat Plain. The research indicates that Quaternary climatic changes played a significant role in shaping the landforms and soils in the region. Key pedogenic processes identified include calcification, lessivage, salinization, and gleization.

Delineation of Soil Management Zone Maps at the Regional Scale Using Machine Learning

Sedigheh Maleki, Alireza Karimi, Amin Mousavi, Ruth Kerry, Ruhollah Taghizadeh-Mehrjardi

Summary: This study aims to delineate soil management zones (MZs) based on different soil properties using machine learning methods, in order to achieve sustainable agricultural production by maximizing yields and minimizing environmental damage. A random forest model was applied to map soil properties based on environmental covariates, and the study identified four different MZs according to relationships between soil properties and environmental covariates. The ranking of zones in terms of soil fertility was MZ4 > MZ1 > MZ3 > MZ2 based on the investigated soil properties and the soil quality (SQ) map.

Interactions of soil quality, ages of alluvial fans, and mechanisms controlling total soil organic carbon dynamics

Amir Mohseni, Neda Mohseni, Alireza Karimi, Markus Egli

Summary: This study examined the impact of alluvial fan aging on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics in north-eastern Iran. The results showed that total SOC and its fractions were key indicators of soil quality. Younger alluvial fans had higher SOC content but lower soil quality, mainly due to the accumulation of coarse particulate organic carbon. Older alluvial fans, on the other hand, exhibited physical protection of SOC against microbial decomposition due to long-term weathering. Alluvial fan aging resulted in geomorphological differences and contributed to high variability of SOC dynamics.

Summary: This study aims to predict the variability of selected heavy metals (HMs) in a semiarid watershed in central Iran by utilizing random forest (RF) and a set of environmental covariates. The results revealed that a combination of remote sensing data, topographic attributes, and soil properties was the most effective for predicting HMs content. Clay content and magnetic susceptibility were identified as the most important soil properties, while remote sensing data and topographic attributes played a significant role in estimating HMs.
