Summary: Bronchiectasis has a prevalence of 5.4% in lung cancer screening participants and is associated with more respiratory symptoms and, in those with COPD, lower lung function and more emphysema. However, incidental findings of mild bronchiectasis are not very relevant in a lung cancer screening population unless COPD is also present.

Summary: This study aimed to provide quantitative volumetric data of the total lung and lobes in inspiration and expiration from healthy adults using paired inspiratory-expiratory chest CT scans. The results showed that LLL and RUL had a significant impact on ventilation, emphasizing the need for more precise pulmonary functional evaluation beyond the total lung level.

Summary: This study analyzed the radiological and functional lung sequelae of COVID-19 patients at 3 months post-discharge, revealing that approximately half of the patients still had residual abnormalities. Further long-term follow-up studies are needed to fully understand the implications of these findings.

Summary: In this study, the concordance between different methods of measuring lung volumes in various pulmonary conditions was analyzed. Lung volumes measured by body plethysmography (BP) and CT scanning showed high concordance, while the new pressure-derived method (PDM) had low intra-test variability but reasonable concordance with BP.

Summary: Most studies have shown moderate correlations between forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and other spirometric indices with CT structural lung damage. However, there are patients with normal FEV1 but abnormal CT and vice versa at an individual level. Longitudinal studies indicate that deterioration of structural lung damage does not occur in parallel with lung function progression, and lung clearance index is a better predictor of CT findings.

Summary: Post-COVID sequelae, such as lung injury and PASC, present complex and poorly understood manifestations, mechanisms, and outcomes in both short and long term. Supportive therapy remains the main approach, while extensive research aims to better understand and identify pathways for intervention. Historical insights are important to determine whether current observations are genuinely novel or represent previously overlooked or misunderstood syndromes.

Summary: This study developed an automatic algorithm for quantifying total volume and lung impairments in different diseases, which showed good agreement with a semi-automatic algorithm. The algorithm is capable of measuring volume and differentiating various pulmonary involvements, providing reliable quantification for physicians in important lung diseases.

Summary: This study conducted in a lung nodule and lung cancer screening clinic aimed to evaluate the role of stereotactic body radiation therapy among patients enrolled in a lung cancer screening program. The findings revealed that one in four patients with screen-detected pulmonary nodules requiring intervention were treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy, highlighting the importance of radiation oncologists in the multidisciplinary management of pulmonary nodules.

Summary: In this pilot program, the prevalence of lung cancer among people with HIV screened using LDCT was 3.6%, and the number needed to screen to detect one case of lung cancer was 28. While data from additional cohorts with longitudinal measurements are needed, people with HIV are a target population for lung cancer screening with LDCT.

Summary: Lung cancer is the second most common cancer and leading cause of cancer death in the US, with smoking and increasing age being the primary risk factors. Annual screening with low-dose computed tomography is recommended for adults aged 50 to 80 years with a 20 pack-year smoking history.

Summary: By using chest CT in COVID-19 patients, extensive lung damage can be visually assessed with a score related to 30-day mortality independent of conventional risk factors of the disease. Patients with a vldCTs score of 7 or higher had significantly higher 30-day mortality rates compared to those with a score below 7.

Summary: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic disease with respiratory symptoms typically starting at birth. Diagnosing PCD requires a comprehensive approach utilizing methods such as HSVM, IF, TEM, and genetics. PCD-UNIBE in Switzerland is the first comprehensive PCD diagnostic center, offering a thorough diagnostic approach for assessing patients with potential PCD.

Summary: Drugs modulating the CFTR protein have revolutionized the management of cystic fibrosis patients. However, there is significant interindividual pharmacokinetic variability and potential drug-drug interactions. Summary: Hallermann-Streiff syndrome (HSS) is a rare congenital syndrome characterized by midface hypoplasia, beak nose, and micrognathia. Narrowness of the upper airways in HSS patients can lead to severe respiratory complications such as obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), especially in infancy. This case report demonstrates successful management of severe and early OSAS in an infant with HSS using non-invasive ventilation (NIV).

Summary: There are significant differences in diagnosis consistency between the algorithms developed by ERS, ATS, and PCD-UNIBE, with 15% of patients having contradictory diagnoses. Further efforts are needed to develop an updated, internationally harmonised, and standardised PCD diagnostic algorithm to improve diagnosis in discordant cases.
