Herein the results of a multicenter study from the Turkish Pediatric Kidney Transplantation Study Group are reported. The aims of this study were to compare the quality of life (QoL) scores of Turkish children who are dialysis patients (DP), renal transplant recipients (TR), and age-matched healthy controls and to compare child-self and parent-proxy scores. The Turkish versions of the Kinder Lebensqualitat Fragebogen (KINDLA (R)) questionnaires were used as a QoL measure. The study group consisted of 211 children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease (CKD) (139 TR and 72 DP aged between 4-18 years; 13.7 A +/- 3.5 years) from 11 university hospitals, 129 parents of these patients, 232 age-matched healthy children and adolescents (aged between 4-18 years; 13.1 +/- 3.5 years) and 156 of their parents. Patients with CKD had lower scores in all subscales except for physical well-being than those in the control group. TR had higher scores in physical well-being, self-esteem, friends' subscales, and total scores than DP. Child-self scores were lower than parent-proxy scores, especially in CKD, DP, and control groups. Concordance between parent-proxy and child-self reports in the TR, DP, CKD, and control groups was only moderate for the majority of subscales (r = 0.41-0.61). It was concluded that parent-proxy scores on the QoL were not equivalent to child-self scores and that evaluating both children's and parents' perspectives were important. Additionally, psychosocial counseling is crucial not only for patients with CKD but also for their parents.

Impact of Matrix Metalloproteinases 2 and 9 and Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase 2 Gene Polymorphisms on Allograft Rejection in Pediatric Renal Transplant Recipients

Selin Akad Dincer, Feride Iffet Sahin, Yunus Kasim Terzi, Kaan Gulleroglu, Esra Baskin, Mehmet Haberal

Summary: Functional polymorphisms of MMP2, MMP9, and TIMP2 genes are associated with renal allograft rejection and interstitial fibrosis in pediatric renal transplant recipients. These genetic variations could serve as important predictive biological markers for the follow-up of kidney transplant recipients.

Summary: This study reviewed the long-term survival outcomes of patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF)-related amyloidosis who underwent kidney transplantation (KT). The study found that the survival rate of these patients was lower compared to the control group, but there was no statistically significant difference. However, short- and long-term complications still need to be resolved.

Summary: This study was conducted to evaluate the positive effect of platelet-rich plasma on the healing process of an anastomotic wound in a rat model of ureterocystoanastomosis. The results showed that the use of platelet-rich plasma significantly increased tissue hydroxyproline levels, and there were no significant differences in epithelial damage, acute inflammation, or fibrosis between the platelet-rich plasma group and the control group.

Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio as a Potential Indicator of Infection-Associated Emergency Visits of Renal Transplant Recipients

Summary: The platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio is significantly elevated in renal transplant patients with infection. It can be used as an indicator of inflammation in these patients presenting to emergency departments. The platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio can be used in conjunction with other biomarkers to assess systemic inflammation.

Doppler ultrasonography blood flow changes of the hepatic artery in liver transplants complicated with cholangitis

Funda Ulu Ozturk, Sehnaz Tezcan, Ebru Hatice Ayvazoglu Soy, Nihal Uslu, Mehmet Haberal

Summary: This study investigated the hepatic arterial Doppler ultrasound findings related to cholangitis after liver transplantation. It was found that the hepatic arterial flow, resistive index, and diameter decreased in patients with cholangitis after recovery. These findings can help in the early diagnosis of cholangitis and prevent graft loss.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of exertional leg pain in pediatric FMF patients and analyze its association with other characteristics of FMF. It was found that patients with exertional leg pain had higher colchicine dosage, higher frequency of arthritis and arthralgia, higher disease severity scores, and a stronger association with the M694V mutation.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the gradual changes in left and right ventricle functions in children and young adults before and after renal transplant. The results showed that both systolic and diastolic dysfunctions of both ventricles were common in pediatric renal transplant recipients, and these dysfunctions usually decreased with time. However, improvements in right ventricle dysfunction were slower, even in optimally treated posttransplant patients.
