Visceral leishmaniasis is a severe form of infection caused by a parasite endemic along the Mediterranean coast, Complications such as infection-associated hemophagocytic syndrome can occur despite correct therapy. We report visceral leishmaniasis-associated infection-associated hemophagocytic syndrome in 3 patients with chronic granulomatous disease.

Summary: The study analyzed mortality and immunity data of patients with ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) in relation to IgA deficiency, finding that patients with IgA deficiency have significantly lower survival rates, lymphocyte counts, and subsets compared to A-T patients without IgA deficiency. This suggests that IgA deficiency may indicate a poorer prognosis for classical A-T patients.

Recovery of serum testosterone levels is an accurate predictor of survival from COVID-19 in male patients

Thomson, Rosanna Paciucci

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between serum testosterone levels and immune cell skewing with disease severity in male COVID-19 patients. The study found quantitative differences in biochemical predictors of disease outcome between male and female patients. Longitudinal analyses identified serum testosterone trajectories as the strongest predictor of survival in male COVID-19 patients, and changes in serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and androstenedione levels were inconsistent with physiological feedback patterns.

Soluble Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 as a Prognostic Biomarker for Disease Progression in Patients Infected with SARS-CoV-2

Noelia Diaz-Troyano, Pablo Gabriel-Medina, Stephen Weber, Martin Klammer, Raquel Barquin-DelPino, Laura Castillo-Ribelles, Angels Esteban, Manuel Hernandez-Gonzalez, Roser Ferrer-Costa, Tomas Pumarola, Francisco Rodriguez-Frias

Summary: The predictive value of soluble angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (sACE2) in predicting hospitalization risk and disease severity in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection was evaluated. Compared with discharged patients, levels of sACE2 were significantly lower, while levels of CRP, GDF-15, IL-6, and sFlt-1 were significantly higher in hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2. sACE2 could be further investigated as a potential biomarker or as part of a panel to predict the severity of COVID-19 and the need for hospitalization.

Commercialized kits to assess T-cell responses against SARS-CoV-2 S peptides. A pilot study in health care workers

Monica Martinez-Gallo, Juliana Esperalba, Ricardo Pujol-Borrell, Victor Sanda, Iria Arrese-Munoz, Candela Fernandez-Naval, Andres Anton, Victoria Cardona, Moises Labrador-Horrillo, Tomas Pumarola, Manuel Hernandez-Gonzalez

Summary: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of a validated assay of T-cell responses as a complement to antibody tests for evaluating the levels of protection generated by natural infection or SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. The results showed that the IGRA test detected T-cell responses in naturally exposed and vaccinated individuals, and there was a high correlation with specific antibody levels. These findings suggest that the IGRA test could be a promising tool for measuring the state of the immune response to SARS-CoV-2.

Newborn Screening for SCID: Experience in Spain (Catalonia)

Summary: Newborn screening for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) was initiated in Catalonia in 2017, making it the first region in Spain and Europe to include this testing universally. The results from Catalonia show that early diagnosis and treatment through newborn screening programs can benefit patients with SCID and non-SCID, highlighting the importance of a national screening program in Spain to better understand the exact incidence of SCID.
