Summary: This study compared the clinical characteristics and outcome of Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) between children and adults. The results showed that facial nerve palsy and headache were more prevalent in children, while radiculitis and encephalitis were mostly reported in adults. Children had a shorter time between symptom onset and diagnosis and a higher rate of complete recovery.

Summary: Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) is a manifestation of Lyme disease that affects the central and peripheral nervous system. It is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted through tick bites. LNB presents differently in children and adults, with adults commonly experiencing painful meningoradicultis and children often presenting with facial nerve palsy and/or subacute meningitis. Other symptoms, such as subacute headache and non-specific symptoms like loss of appetite and fatigue, may also occur. Early recognition and diagnosis are crucial for effective management of LNB in children.

Summary: This study evaluated NSE and S100B in serum as prognostic biomarkers for clinical outcomes in pediatric LNB patients. The results showed that there were no significant differences in NSE and S100B concentrations between LNB patients and controls, and these biomarkers concentrations were not associated with clinical recovery at the 2-month follow-up.

Summary: Serologically confirmed Lyme disease in children is relatively rare in the Republic of Ireland, with 98% of children tested being seronegative. Among the seropositive cases, 40% could have been diagnosed based on clinical findings alone. Neurological presentations were common (40%), and almost all cases (97%) where data were available reported full resolution of symptoms.

Summary: This study found that characteristics significantly associated with Lyme neuroborreliosis in children with acute facial nerve palsy include headache, meningeal irritation symptoms, presentation in summer months, and a history of tick bites.

Summary: This is a case report on Lyme disease, in which the patient developed central nervous system large vessel vasculitis, ischemic stroke, and tumefactive contrast-enhancing brain lesions, which are unusual complications of neuroborreliosis. The diagnosis was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging and transcranial ultrasound, and the patient was successfully treated.

Summary: This article reports a patient with neuroborreliosis who presented with central nervous system large vessel vasculitis, ischemic stroke, and tumefactive contrast-enhancing brain lesions, which are unusual complications of Lyme disease. The case highlights the importance of considering vasculopathy and cerebrovascular events in patients with neuroborreliosis, despite being rare.

Summary: Diagnosis of neurosyphilis and Lyme neuroborreliosis remains challenging, with few advancements in the former and promising diagnostic accuracy with the use of chemokine CXCL13 in the latter. Treatment approaches for both diseases need to be evidence-based to avoid overdiagnosis and overtreatment.

Summary: This study demonstrated the efficacy of oral amoxicillin, oral azithromycin, injectable ceftriaxone, and injectable cefotaxime for treating Lyme disease. Cefuroxime and penicillin were found to be safe for treating LD. Amoxicillin was effective for treating erythema migrans. However, no significant advantage of doxycycline in efficacy and safety for treating LD was observed.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the epidemiology of Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) in Kalmar County, southern Sweden, between 2008 and 2019, and to analyze the relationship between LNB incidence and climate factors. Positive relationships were found between mean temperature and precipitation with LNB incidence, suggesting a potential impact of climate on the incidence of LNB. Further studies with larger sample sizes and longer time frames are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed hospitalizations for Lyme disease in two southwest Michigan hospital systems from 2017 to 2021. Lyme admissions showed a sharp increase, with parallel increases in admissions for Lyme carditis and neuroborreliosis. Southwest Michigan is becoming an endemic area for Lyme disease.
