Summary: Liquid ink-printing followed by sintering is used to fabricate WC-Co microlattices and cutting tools. The microstructure and hardness of WC-xCo are studied for different carbide-to-binder ratios and sintering temperatures, with an emphasis on the effects of Co content on densification and mechanical properties. The study also demonstrates the infiltration of Cu into WC-Co lattices to form dense composites with improved thermal conductivity and ductility for cutting tool applications.

Summary: This study found that increasing the proportion of Ni3Al in the Co-Ni3Al composite binder phase significantly increases the solid-liquid interfacial energy, providing a higher driving force for abnormal grain growth (AGG) of WC, but also raises the energy barrier for the migration of W and C atoms into the liquid binder phase, ultimately inhibiting the AGG of WC.

Summary: WC-Co-Ti3SiC2 cemented carbides with different fractions of Ti3SiC2 were successfully prepared and characterized in this study. The addition of Ti3SiC2 resulted in refined WC grains in the composites, and the refinement was achieved by the decomposition of Ti3SiC2. The optimal composition of 3.0 wt% Ti3SiC2 exhibited excellent hardness and indentation fracture toughness values.

Summary: By using STEM/EDX techniques, WC/WC grain boundaries in ultra-coarse WC-Co hardmetals with different shapes of WC grains were examined. It was found that the state of WC-WC grain boundaries varies in hardmetals with different carbon contents, which is presumably related to the wetting rates of tungsten carbide by liquid Co-based binders.

Summary: Metal matrix composites reinforced with WC particles and Co or Ni matrices are known for their unique combination of hardness, toughness, and superior wear performance. This study focused on Ni-WCNi composite coatings and found that coatings with higher WC fill ratios displayed better wear resistance due to the uniform distribution of WC particles and shorter mean free path reducing adhesive wear. However, at higher loads, subsurface crack propagation at WC particle interfaces led to a reduction in the protective role of mechanically mixed layers. Scratch tests were used to qualitatively compare coating cohesion strengths and correlate them to wear properties.

Summary: Ni50 and Ni50-WC coatings were fabricated using the laser cladding manufacture (LCM) technique. The coatings exhibited various phases such as g-(Ni, Fe), WC, W2C, M23C6, M7C3, and Ni3Fe. The Ni50-10WC and Ni50-20WC coatings showed significantly improved microhardness and wear resistance compared to the substrates, with the Ni50-20WC coating having the highest microhardness and the lowest friction coefficient among all coatings.

Summary: The demand for improved hardmetal components with a wide range of properties is increasing due to supply shortages and stricter regulations. To address this, WC-NiCrMo composites were developed as an alternative to conventional WC-Co hardmetals. The new composite showed lower hardness but higher corrosion resistance and better wear resistance.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of nickel binder metal and molybdenum carbide as additional alloying elements on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of WC-based cemented carbides. Comparison with conventional WC-Co cemented carbide was conducted. Various analysis techniques were used to characterize the sintered alloys, before and after corrosive tests. The results showed that the WC-NiMo cemented carbide exhibited similar microstructures to WC-Co, but with observed pores and binder islands. The corrosion tests demonstrated superior corrosion resistance and higher passivation capacity in the WC-NiMo cemented carbide compared to WC-Co, as evidenced by various electrochemical measurements.

Summary: Ni60 and WC composite coatings were prepared on 17-4PH martensitic stainless steel, and the coating with 30 wt% agglomeration-sintering WC (AS-WC) exhibited higher hardness and better wear resistance compared to the coating with 30 wt% sintering-crushing WC (SC-WC) and the Ni60 coating without WC. Microstructure analysis showed that the AS-WC doped coating had a higher amount of dispersed carbides, resulting in its superior mechanical properties.

Summary: FeMnCoCr-WC coatings with different WC mass fractions were prepared on Ti6Al4V alloy to improve their tribological properties. The addition of WC resulted in grain refinement and increased coating hardness. The coefficients of friction and wear rates of the coatings decreased with the increase in WC mass fraction at both room temperature and 500 degrees C. The wear mechanism of the coatings also changed with the WC mass fraction at room temperature, while it remained unchanged at 500 degrees C.

Summary: The study found that increasing the Cr3C2/VC content leads to a decrease in WC grain size and a change in shape, with hardness increasing and fracture toughness decreasing as a result. When the dopants exceed the maximum solubility in the Co phase, detrimental carbides for the TRS and impact toughness of the cemented carbide are formed.
