This study aimed to investigate the butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activity in mice experimentally infected with Toxoplasma gondii during the acute phase. Twenty mice were divided in two groups with 10 animals each: group A was composed of uninfected mice while group B was formed by rodents infected with T. gondii. Five days after infection, blood was collected and serum separated, and fragments of liver and brain were obtained. In serum and liver homogenate was noted a significant reduction (P < 0.05) in BChE activity in infected mice when compared with uninfected ones. In serum was observed an increase in the activity of alanine aminotransferase and urea, associated with reduction in alkaline phosphatase activity and in the levels of total protein and albumin. Histologically, there were foci of necrosis and parasites in the forms of tachyzoites and cysts, with bradyzoites in liver samples of infected animals. Based on these results, we conclude that toxoplasmosis reduces BChE activity in mice, and this alteration is probably related to the liver damage caused by the parasitism. Therefore, this enzymatic alteration can directly contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease. (C) 2012 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Gastrointestinal helminths in dogs: occurrence, risk factors, and multiple antiparasitic drug resistance

Fagner D'ambroso Fernandes, Renata Rojas Guerra, Ananda Segabinazzi Ries, Juliana Felipetto Cargnelutti, Luis Antonio Sangioni, Fernanda Silveira Flores Vogel

Summary: This study aimed to identify antiparasitic-resistant helminths and evaluate the infection rate and risk factors for parasitism in canines. The results showed a high prevalence of Ancylostoma caninum infection in dogs, and variations in the efficacy of different drugs. The environment and breed of the dogs were found to be important risk factors for infection.

Sarcocyst Quantification and Viability: Freezing Treatment as an Alternative to Carcass Condemnation

Bibiana Rodrigues de Freitas, Isac Junior Roman, Bibiana Rossi Reis, Fernando de Souza Rodrigues, Patricia Brauenig, Juliana Felipetto Cargnelutti, Rodrigo Casquero Cunha, Fernanda Silveira Flores Vogel

Summary: The purpose of this study was to detect visible cysts of Sarcocystis in cattle hearts from slaughterhouses and evaluate the viability of sarcocysts after freezing treatment. Cysts were observed in all analyzed tissues, with a density of 21.73 cysts/g of tissue. Freezing treatment at -35℃ for ≥3 h and -20℃ for ≥8 h rendered the cysts and bradyzoites unviable.

Summary: This systematic review identified the host species of Leishmania spp. in Brazil, excluding domestic dogs. Horses, domestic cats, rodents, and marsupials were found to be the most commonly infected species, while bats were identified as potential reservoirs. Molecular tests were frequently used for diagnosis. Understanding the species involved in the epidemiology and biological cycle of Leishmania can improve control measures for zoonotic leishmaniasis.

Summary: Plasma membrane anchored nucleotidases (E-ATPDases) play an important role in the hydrolysis and regulation of nucleotides in lymphocytes. The activities of E-ATPDases vary in different immune organs and resident subpopulations of lymphocytes. This study characterizes the E-ATPDases activities in bone marrow, thymus, and mesenteric lymph node lymphocytes of Wistar rats. The results suggest that the kinetic values of E-NTPDase activity in immune tissue lymphocytes could be an important therapeutic target for immune-related diseases.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the presence of DNA from three protozoa in tissues of wild boars slaughtered in southern Brazil. The DNA of at least one of the studied pathogens was detected in each animal, with Toxoplasma gondii being the most prevalent. Coinfection between different pathogens was also observed. Considering the high frequency of detection and the zoonotic risk, it is important to prioritize monitoring measures for wild boar populations.

Sarcocystis spp. detection in cattle using different diagnostic methods1

Maiara S. T. Ferreira, Fagner D'ambroso Fernandes, Patricia Braeunig, Renata R. Guerra, Luis Antonio Sangioni, Fernanda S. F. Vogel

Summary: This study investigated the detection of Sarcocystis spp. infection in cattle using fresh microscopic examination, PCR, and serological methods. The results showed that microscopic Sarcocystis were observed in 100% of the myocardial samples, and Sarcocystis DNA was present in 86% of these samples. Antibodies against Sarcocystis spp. were detected in 96% and 80% of the serum samples at 1:25 and 1:200 dilutions respectively. The combination of these three methods showed good sensitivity and detection for Sarcocystis spp., providing a useful approach for diagnosing live animals and monitoring the herd status on a large scale.

Summary: This study aimed to detect the presence of anti-Leishmania spp. antibodies in domestic birds from a rural area in southern Brazil. The results showed that all the rural areas sampled had positive birds for the presence of Leishmania spp. This suggests that domestic birds can be used as sentinels for the circulation of this parasite, and their blood can serve as a preferred food source for the insects that transmit the disease.

PPY-cell hyperplasia accompanying NENs: Immunohistochemical and nuclear medicine analysis

P. Suhaj, D. Do, T. Olejar, R. Pichova, O. Lang, R. Matej

Summary: Pancreatic polypeptide cell hyperplasia (PPY-H) is a multiplication of neuroendocrine cells producing pancreatic polypeptide (PPY). The development and role of PPY-H still need to be further elucidated. This study analyzed 12 cases of PPY-H accompanying pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasias (NEN) and found that gastrointestinal symptoms may be more related to PPY-H rather than NEN hormonal production. Strong SSTR2 expression in PPY-H suggests the potential utility of radiotracers in clinical diagnostics, but further studies are needed.

TESC acts as a prognostic factor and promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition progression in esophageal squamous carcinoma

Summary: Tescalcin (TESC) is upregulated in esophageal squamous carcinoma (ESCC) and is associated with poor prognosis, tumor infiltration, staging, and lymph node metastasis. TESC promotes proliferation, invasion, migration, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) progression in ESCC, as well as activates the AKT pathway. TESC may serve as a prognostic factor and provide a new therapeutic strategy for ESCC.
