Summary: This study investigated the association between iodine intake and nodal metastasis in patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). The results showed that iodine intake has a closer association with female patients, and high iodine intake may be associated with lymph node metastasis and extrathyroidal extension in female PTMC patients.

Summary: The reasons for the increasing incidence of thyroid cancer are unclear, but lifestyle, environmental factors, and complications may play a role. Iodine intake may affect papillary thyroid carcinoma, but the available evidence is limited due to various factors.

Summary: The effect of iodine on papillary thyroid cancer has been controversial. This study analyzed the relationship between urinary iodine concentration and PTC using case-control studies. The results showed that excessive iodine intake was positively associated with PTC occurrence, while adequate iodine intake may be a protective factor. However, there was no significant association between urinary iodine and BRAF mutation or lymph node metastasis in PTC patients. The measurement method of urinary iodine may influence the study results.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the lymph node metastasis (LNM) and recurrence characteristics of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) tumors located in the upper portion of the thyroid. The study found that patients with tumors in the upper portion of the thyroid were more prone to lateral lymph node metastasis (LLNM) and had a higher risk of recurrence. Based on the findings, a predictive risk-scoring model and a postoperative strategy selection flow chart were established to predict the risk of LLNM and guide individualized treatment for PTC patients with tumors in the upper portion.

Summary: This study investigates the effectiveness of radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment in low- to intermediate-risk papillary thyroid cancer patients. The results show that RAI treatment is associated with better overall survival in patients who are aged 55 and above, have multifocality, extrathyroidal extension, and intermediate risk according to the American Thyroid Association. However, the benefits of RAI treatment may be limited in patients with AJCC stage I, tumor size ≤ 1 cm, unifocality, capsular invasion, and low-risk diseases according to the ATA.

Summary: Patients with radioactive iodine refractory metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer have a poor prognosis. This study aimed to characterize patients with non-iodine-avid disease at diagnosis. The results showed that non-iodine-avid disease is highly prevalent in DTC patients with BVL cancers, particularly with BRAF (V600E) and TERT promoter mutations, and is associated with older age.

Summary: Thyroid tissue has a unique immune microenvironment that may play a role in the recurrence of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). This study found that PTC patients have increased numbers of memory CD8(+)T cells in their thyroid tissue, and the expression patterns of PD-1, CD39, and CD103 on these cells are associated with recurrence rates. These findings suggest that CD8(+)T cell signatures could serve as prognostic markers for PTC recurrence.

Summary: This study presents a rare case series of synchronous occurrence of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in the same thyroid gland. The synchronous MTC/PTC were classified into 4 subtypes and the clinical and pathological aspects as well as the results were presented.

Summary: The study utilized single-cell RNA sequencing to investigate the tumor microenvironment heterogeneity and the relationship between papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT). Distinct molecular signatures and transcription states were identified in PTC cells, while B lymphocyte infiltration was predominantly associated with concurrent HT origin. This research provides valuable insights into the immunological link between PTC and HT.

Summary: In this study, the gene expression profile of metastasized PTC was analyzed to identify biomarkers associated with an increased risk of PTC metastasis. Fourteen genes were found to be associated with this risk, with DIO1, HGD, SLC26A4, and TPO identified as key risk-associated genes that may affect the occurrence and development of PTC through iodine metabolism. These genes could serve as a reference for clinical evaluation and treatment of metastatic PTC.
