Cercarial dermatitis is caused by animal schistosomes in many parts of the world including Iran. Various stages of the parasites have been studied in intermediate and definitive hosts in northern and southwestern Iran; however, no molecular investigation for species identification and classification of these agents has been carried out, so far. In the present study, more than 3,800 aquatic snails were collected from water sources of Khuzestan, southwest Iran. The snails were identified as Lymnaea gedrosiana, Radix auricularia, Melanoides tuberculata, Melanopsis sp. and Physa acuta. They were examined for schistosome cercariae. Two specimens of M. tuberculata were infected with ocellate furcocercariae belonging to the family Schistosomatidae. Molecular studies were carried on these schistosomatid samples. Both samples belong to an unknown schistosome species and genus in sister position to Gigantobilharzia-Dendritobilharzia clade. They differ from other species in their ITS sequence region as well as in their intermediate host specificity-This is one of the first reports on schistosome cercariae from M. tuberculata and the first including molecular data. Due to adaptability and invasiveness of this snail species, this new schistosome species, as a potential causative agent of cercarial dermatitis in humans, needs to be studied further.

Tahereh Davoodi, Ali Khamesipour, Saeed Shahabi, Fatemeh Gholizadeh, Daniel Pourkamal, Gholamreza Hatam

Summary: This study investigated the molecular identification and geographical distribution of anthroponotic and zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in southern Iran, revealing that ACL was only detected in Shiraz city, while ZCL was observed in both Shiraz and most counties of Fars Province. Additionally, the district 8 of Shiraz municipality showed the highest number of CL infections, suggesting the need for further attention.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of nomadic tribes on the epidemiology of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) in southwestern Iran and found that living in areas around nomadic travel routes significantly increased the incidence of CL. Additionally, irrigated farm areas were the only land cover type within nomadic travel routes that had a significant impact on CL.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between malaria and climate in the southeast region of Iran. The findings indicate that the infection rate varies by season, and malaria in rural areas is more climate-related. Additionally, the outbreak of Plasmodium falciparum/P. vivax occurs during autumn/summer, with opposite relationships between patient numbers and dry/wet years in summer.

A family cluster of cutaneous Leishmania major infection unresponsive to intralesional meglumine antimonial: Case reports

Masood Ziaee, Mohammad Amin Ghatee, Walter Robert Taylor, Mehdi Karamian

Summary: This study describes a family cluster of L. major infection, where the family members traveled to an endemic area and were treated differently, with two patients being hospitalized due to disease progression. Genotyping of the parasite gene revealed that the infecting strain was the same as one found in a tourist who visited North African countries. It is hypothesized that the host immune response may have been reduced in the hospitalized patients.

Current global status, subtype distribution and zoonotic significance of Blastocystis in dogs and cats: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Morteza Shams, Laya Shamsi, Amirhosein Yousefi, Alireza Sadrebazzaz, Ali Asghari, Behnam Mohammadi-Ghalehbin, Saeed Shahabi, Gholamreza Hatam

Summary: This study provides a global estimate of Blastocystis infection and subtype distribution in dogs and cats, finding that cats have a slightly higher infection rate than dogs, while dogs have higher subtype diversity. Dogs and cats are both involved in zoonotic transmission of various Blastocystis subtypes. More comprehensive studies are needed to elucidate the true epidemiology and subtype distribution of Blastocystis in dogs and cats.

Bioinformatics analysis for the purpose of designing a novel multi-epitope DNA vaccine against Leishmania major

Sama Rashidi, Seyed Nooreddin Faraji, Amirreza Javadi Mamaghani, Saeid Hatam, Bahram Kazemi, Peyman Bemani, Seyyed Javad Seyyed Tabaei, Gholamreza Hatam

Summary: Leishmaniasis, especially Cutaneous Leishmania (CL), is a major infectious disease worldwide. This study aims to design a new multi-epitope DNA vaccine using immune bioinformatics to effectively control the disease. Multiple antigens were selected and their MHC-I epitopes were used to construct the vaccine. The designed vaccine showed high stability and antigenicity, making it a suitable model for further animal and human studies.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the Leishmania species infecting domestic dogs in Golestan Province, Iran. The results showed that 7% of the dogs tested positive for antibodies and 25% tested positive for Leishmania spp. DNA by PCR, with most of the dogs being asymptomatic. PCR testing also revealed a significantly higher infection rate in male dogs compared to female dogs. Additionally, a new emerging agent for Leishmania infection was identified.
