The genome size is 1.03 Gb with an average gene length of 33,605 bp and 16,078 protein-coding genes. This new reference genome will enhance our understanding of the Rock Ptarmigan's evolutionary history, vulnerability to climate change, and serve as a benchmark for related species.

Summary: A new species of quill mite, Stibarokris nielseni, was discovered on Manx Shearwater, marking the third record of this mite species in Iceland and the first one outside of Galliformes. The new species can be distinguished from others in the same genus by the distinctive shape and size of the tarsal claws of legs III and IV, as well as the placement of the hysteronotal teeth. The distribution pattern of this genus of quill mites on birds aligns strongly with the avian lineages grouped in the clade Feraequornithes. However, quill mites have not been confirmed on representatives of Sphenisciformes, which could be due to their specialized way of life or insufficient sampling efforts. Additionally, the presence of Stibarokris on flamingos (Phoenicopteriformes), which are distant from Feraequornithes, is most likely the result of successful host switching.
