Summary: A prospective cohort study conducted in Tanzania found that the efficacy of albendazole monotherapy for neurocysticercosis was unsatisfactory, but the combination therapy of albendazole and praziquantel resulted in a high rate of cyst resolution.

Summary: Emodepside, originally developed for veterinary use, was tested in healthy subjects in two phase I studies to assess safety and pharmacokinetics of liquid service formulation (LSF) and immediate release (IR) tablet. Results showed rapid absorption of LSF with dose-proportional increase in plasma concentrations, while tablets had significantly lower absorption rate and extent.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of single-dose praziquantel against Schistosoma mansoni infection and the safety of praziquantel plus albendazole preventive chemotherapy in school children. The results showed that single-dose praziquantel is effective for the treatment of intestinal schistosomiasis and the combination therapy is safe and tolerable. However, reduced effectiveness was observed in moderate-to-heavy infection and adverse events were reported in about one-fifth of infected children.

Summary: Molecular diagnostic methods based on nucleic acid detection have advantages in sensitivity, specificity, and cross-reactivity with other pathogens. In this study, the efficacy of a real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR assay for schistosomiasis japonica in mice, before and after treatment with praziquantel, was evaluated. The method showed good sensitivity and specificity, and its sensitivity correlated with the infection intensity in mice. It had better potential utility for evaluating the treatment efficacy of praziquantel in schistosome-infected mice compared to a soluble-egg-antigen-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Summary: This study evaluated the anti-inflammatory and toxicology effects of H. cordata essential oil-containing formulation, H16 aerosol, in vivo. The study found that H16 aerosol had anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects, and it was safe for use. This suggests that H16 aerosol could be a new herbal therapy and contribute to the modernization of herbal medicine.

Summary: This study evaluated a chitosan derivative, alginate and praziquantel conjugated nanobioparticle for oral treatment of digenetic trematodes in highly infected Corydoras schwartzi. It showed the safety and effectiveness of the drug delivery nanobioparticles, making them a promising strategy for pathogen treatments through oral administration.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the efficacy and adverse events of nano-bound paclitaxel in cancer treatment, which showed controversial results. Fifteen randomized clinical trials were included, and the results showed that nanoparticle albumin-bound (Nab-) paclitaxel and polymeric micellar (PM-) paclitaxel had better objective response rates and partial response rates compared to solvent-based paclitaxel. However, the nano-paclitaxel formulations increased the risk of hematological adverse events and peripheral sensory neuropathy, while the PM-paclitaxel treatment had a high safety effect.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a commercially available spot-on formulation containing moxidectin 2.5%/imidacloprid 10% for the treatment of O. lupi or Cercopithifilaria spp. skin-dwelling microfilariae in naturally infected dogs. The results suggest that a single treatment with this formulation is efficacious in eliminating skin-dwelling microfilariae in dogs and may help reduce the risk of O. lupi infection in humans.

Summary: Calcifediol is the prohormone of the vitamin D endocrine system, used to prevent and treat vitamin D deficiency. It is more efficient and safe than cholecalciferol, with a rapid onset of action and greater potency. The increase in 25-OH vitamin D depends on the dose and frequency of calcifediol administration, while cholecalciferol administration is influenced by additional factors such as obesity and malabsorption.

Summary: The feasibility of transcranial sonothrombolysis has been demonstrated, but little is known about the relationships between thermal or mechanical mechanisms and thrombolytic outcomes. In this study, the effect and safety of temperature and ultrasound were investigated through in vitro and in vivo thrombolysis models. While the spot heating and ultrasound irradiation models seem effective for disintegrating clots in vitro, the safety of the in vivo model was not fully supported by the data, indicating that a shorter time exposure could be less invasive than a longer exposure.

Summary: Given the global increase in obesity and type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are becoming important causes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCCs caused by chronic inflammation mediated by lipotoxicity have unique characteristics, such as occurring in up to 50% of NAFLD-HCC patients without cirrhosis and having a lower annual incidence, leading to challenges in surveillance strategies. Locoregional treatments may be equally effective regardless of HCC etiology, but the effectiveness of systemic therapy is less clear. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors are likely equally effective, while there are initial signals that immune checkpoint inhibitors may be less effective in NAFLD-HCC compared to viral HCC.
