Ruth Parry, Becky Whittaker, Marco Pino, Laura Jenkins, Esme Worthington, Christina Faull

Summary: Training to enhance healthcare practitioners' capabilities in engaging people in sensitive and end-of-life-related conversations is in demand, but current evaluations have found limited impact. Conversation analytic research can provide in-depth evidence and insights, but its dissemination has mainly been for scientists. This study developed training resources based on conversation analytic evidence, aiming to increase the evidence-base and authenticity of healthcare communication training.

Non-invasive advanced respiratory support in end-of-life care and symptom management: systematic review

David Wenzel, Lucy Bleazard, Coral Jayne Pepper, Eleanor Wilson, Christina Faull

Summary: This study provides a narrative synthesis of the knowledge around symptom control at end of life for patients using non-invasive advanced respiratory support. The findings suggest that NARS can provide hope and relief from respiratory failure symptoms, but also bring significant treatment burden. Staff providing care may experience distress due to uncertainty over the balance of benefit and burden, as well as the complexity of patient care. Further research is needed to better understand the process of withdrawal and how to manage symptoms at the end of life.
