Late Permian soil-forming paleoenvironments on Gondwana: A review

Summary: Paleosols provide valuable information about ancient landscapes, biotic interactions, and climate. They have played an important role in studying global climate changes and major extinctions, such as the end-Permian extinction. Recent research suggests that the extinctions in the marine and terrestrial realms during the end-Permian extinction were not synchronous, and there may have been no true mass extinction for plant and vertebrate communities on a global scale.

Paleoclimate-induced stress on polar forested ecosystems prior to the Permian-Triassic mass extinction

Erik L. Gulbranson, Morgan M. Mellum, Valentina Corti, Aidan Dahlseid, Brian A. Atkinson, Patricia E. Ryberg, Gianluca Cornamusini

Summary: Research suggests that paleoclimate change during the late Permian to early Middle Triassic led to the extinction of forest ecosystems in Antarctica. Paleosol geochemistry and climate simulations indicate that the shift towards more humid conditions may have contributed to the demise of the widespread glossopterid ecosystems.

U-Pb Geochronology and Stable Isotope Geochemistry of Terrestrial Carbonates, Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation, Utah: Implications for Synchronicity of Terrestrial and Marine Carbon Isotope Excursions

Erik L. Gulbranson, E. Troy Rasbury, Greg A. Ludvigson, Andreas Moller, Gregory A. Henkes, Marina B. Suarez, Paul Northrup, Ryan Tappero, Julie A. Maxson, Russell S. Shapiro, Kathleen M. Wooton

Summary: The terrestrial Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation in Utah is an important record for studying paleoclimate, tectonics, and vertebrate ecology and evolution. This study focuses on the geochronology and geochemistry of a terrestrial carbonate near the base of the formation, which potentially records an early Cretaceous global carbon isotope excursion. The results suggest an early subsurface fluid-rock interaction process.
