The present meta-analysis shows no clear association between coffee consumption and the risk of hip fractures. There was a nonlinear association between tea consumption and the risk of hip fracture. Compared to no tea consumption, drinking 1-4 cups of tea daily was associated with a lower risk of hip fracture. Prospective cohort and case-control studies have suggested that coffee and tea consumption may be associated with the risk of hip fracture; the results have, however, been inconsistent. We conducted a meta-analysis to assess the association between coffee and tea consumption and the risk of hip fracture. We performed systematic searches using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and OVID until February 20, 2013, without limits of language or publication year. Relative risks (RRs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were derived using random-effects models throughout all analyses. We conducted categorical, dose-response, heterogeneity, publication bias, and subgroup analyses. Our study was based on 195,992 individuals with 9,958 cases of hip fractures from 14 studies, including six cohort and eight case-control studies. The pooled RRs of hip fractures for the highest vs. the lowest categories of coffee and tea consumption were 0.94 (95 % CI 0.71-1.17) and 0.84 (95 % CI 0.66-1.02), respectively. For the dose-response analysis, we found evidence of a nonlinear association between tea consumption and the risk of hip fracture (p (nonlinearity) < 0.01). Compared to no tea consumption, 1-4 cups of tea per day may reduce the risk of hip fracture by 28 % (0.72; 95 % CI 0.56-0.88 for 1-2 cups/day), 37 % (0.63; 95 % CI 0.32-0.94 for 2-3 cups/day), and 21 % (0.79; 95 % CI 0.62-0.96 for 3-4 cups/day). We found no significant association between coffee consumption and the risk of hip fracture. A nonlinear association emerged between tea consumption and the risk of hip fracture; individuals drinking 1-4 cups of tea per day exhibited a lower risk of hip fractures than those who drank no tea. The association between 5 daily cups of tea, or more, and hip fracture risk should be investigated.

Brown Adipose Tissue Rescues Bone Loss Induced by Cold Exposure

Jingke Du, Zihao He, Mingming Xu, Xinhua Qu, Junqi Cui, Shuangyan Zhang, Shuhong Zhang, Hanjun Li, Zhifeng Yu

Summary: Cold temperature activates the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) to induce bone loss by altering bone remodeling. Brown adipose tissue (BAT), which is influenced by the SNS in cold environments, has been found to have a positive relationship with bone mass. This study showed that bone volume can be restored after cold exposure due to enlarged BAT, which has a beneficial effect on bone mass by facilitating osteogenesis and suppressing osteoclastogenesis.

3D Printing for Bone-Cartilage Interface Regeneration

Jialian Xu, Jindou Ji, Juyang Jiao, Liangjun Zheng, Qimin Hong, Haozheng Tang, Shutao Zhang, Xinhua Qu, Bing Yue

Summary: The self-repair of cartilage and subchondral bone is challenging due to the vasculature defects, complex gradients, and layered zonal architecture. However, three-dimensional (3D) printing technology provides a new strategy for bone-cartilage interface regeneration, offering rapid and accurate molding and personalized therapy. Challenges still remain, such as determining the optimal bioink concentrations and finding biomaterials with dual bioactivities.

Felodipine enhances aminoglycosides efficacy against implant infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, persisters and biofilms

Shutao Zhang, Xinhua Qu, Juyang Jiao, Haozheng Tang, Minqi Wang, You Wang, Hongtao Yang, Weien Yuan, Bing Yue

Summary: Felodipine has antibacterial effects against MRSA, biofilm, and persisters. It can inhibit the expression of proteins associated with aminoglycoside resistance, eradicate formed biofilms and kill persisters. Felodipine also reduces MRSA virulence and modulates bacterial metabolism. It inhibits the growth of persisters by binding to a protease. In a mouse infection model, felodipine in combination with gentamicin alleviates bacterial burden and inflammation.

Zhengyu Cai, Xinhua Qu, Yaochao Zhao, Zhiguo Yuan, Liangjun Zheng, Teng Long, Qiuying Yao, Bing Yue, You Wang

Summary: This study conducted a clinical trial of the world's first totally modular polyetheretherketone (PEEK) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to determine bone density values around the prosthesis, reconstructing a three-dimensional model. Results showed excellent CT compatibility of the PEEK knee joint prosthesis and the ability to assess periprosthetic bone volume changes using Hounsfield units (HU) after CT scans. The assessment may potentially guide future improvements in knee prosthesis alignment techniques and artificial knee prosthesis designs.

Reliable Diagnostic Tests and Thresholds for Preoperative Diagnosis of Non-Inflammatory Arthritis Periprosthetic Joint Infection: A Meta-analysis and Systematic Review

Haozheng Tang, Jialian Xu, Wei'en Yuan, You Wang, Bing Yue, Xinhua Qu

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate and unify diagnostic criteria for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) and found that laboratory-based synovial alpha-defensin and synovial calprotectin are the two best independent preoperative diagnostic tests for PJI. A cut off of 70% for synovial PMN% and tighter cut-offs for synovial WBC and serum CRP could have a better diagnostic accuracy for non-IA patients with chronic PJI.

Influence of porosity on osteogenesis, bone growth and osteointegration in trabecular tantalum scaffolds fabricated by additive manufacturing

Juyang Jiao, Qimin Hong, Dachen Zhang, Minqi Wang, Haozheng Tang, Jingzhou Yang, Xinhua Qu, Bing Yue

Summary: Porous tantalum scaffolds with three different porosities (60%, 70%, and 80%) were prepared using laser powder bed fusing technique to investigate the effects on the adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation of rat mesenchymal stem cells in vitro. The in vivo bone ingrowth and osseointegration effects of each scaffold were evaluated in a rat femoral bone defect model. The results showed that scaffolds with 70% and 80% porosity exhibited better osteogenic proliferation and differentiation capacity, as well as bone ingrowth, suggesting that the 3D printed trabecular tantalum scaffold with 70% porosity could be the optimal choice for implant design.
