Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) can occur irrespective of race. Old age and long-term use of corticosteroid may be a more reliable risk factor than racial characteristics. BRONJ is an increasingly common problem. Most BRONJ occurs following an intravenous administration of bisphosphonate treatment for malignant bone disease and metastatic cancer. As the incidence of BRONJ caused by oral administration of bisphosphonate is quite low, it is believed that this medication is relatively safe and effective in preventing complications of osteoporosis, such as hip or spine fractures. The many known risk factors for BRONJ can be classified as drug-related, local, demographic, and systemic. One demographic and systemic risk factor is race. Most of the case reports of BRONJ present elderly, white women. In this report, we describe five cases of BRONJ caused by oral administration of bisphosphonate in Asian population. All the patients were female and over 65 years old. Three patients had been prescribed with corticosteroids for rheumatoid arthritis. Irrespective of race, elderly women undergoing steroid therapy have an increased incidence of BRONJ even with oral administration of bisphosphonate.

Exploratory use of romosozumab for osteoporosis in a patient with Hajdu-Cheney syndrome: a case report

K. J. Kim, N. Hong, S. Lee, S. Shin, Y. Rhee

Summary: Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS) is a rare inherited skeletal disorder caused by mutations in the NOTCH2 gene. Current treatment options for HCS are limited, and previous reports have shown limited efficacy with other medications. This case report presents the first evidence of romosozumab treatment for HCS in Korea, showing significant improvements in bone mineral density and reduced markers of bone turnover. These findings suggest that romosozumab may be a promising treatment option for HCS patients with osteoporosis.

Jump Power Predicts Fracture Risk in Older Adults Independent of Sarcopenia and FRAX

Namki Hong, Seung Won Burm, Hyeon Chang Kim, Chang Oh Kim, Yumie Rhee

Summary: Low countermovement jump power is associated with prevalent fracture, osteoporosis, and sarcopenia in older adults. However, whether jump power predicts incident fracture risk remains uninvestigated. This study found that low jump power is associated with a higher risk of fracture in older adults and can predict fracture risk independently of sarcopenia and osteoporosis.

Effectiveness of an Oral Health Education Program Using a Smart Toothbrush with Quantitative Light-Induced Fluorescence Technology in Children

Jihyun Lee, Taeyang Lee, Hoi-In Jung, Wonse Park, Je Seon Song

Summary: This randomized controlled trial aimed to improve oral hygiene and habits in children through remote education and management using a smart toothbrush, as well as evaluating plaque state using a Q-ray cam. The results showed that the use of smart toothbrushes provided good dental health education and a plaque-decreasing effect in children aged 6-12 years old. Furthermore, the QLF device can be used as a useful tool for maintaining good oral hygiene in children.

Summary: X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a rare, inherited, multisystem disorder characterized by hypophosphatemia that occurs secondary to renal phosphate wasting. XLH has a significant impact on physical function, mobility, and quality of life, and is associated with substantial socioeconomic burden and health care resource utilization. This study aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for optimizing XLH care in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) context.

Cortical and Trabecular Bone Deficit in Middle-Aged Men Living with HIV

Namki Hong, Jung Ho Kim, Graham Treece, Hyeon Chang Kim, Jun Yong Choi, Yumie Rhee

Summary: Middle-aged men living with human immunodeficiency virus (MLWH) have a significantly higher risk of hip fracture, almost a decade earlier than those without infection. Limited data on cortical and trabecular bone deficit in MLWH were observed. This study found that MLWH had lower hip bone density and deficits in certain bone parameters compared to age and body mass index-matched controls.

Genomic and transcriptomic profiling reveal molecular characteristics of parathyroid carcinoma

Se-Young Jo, Namki Hong, Seunghyun Lee, Jong Ju Jeong, Jeongsoo Won, Jiho Park, Gi Jeong Kim, Sang Kyum Kim, Sangwoo Kim, Yumie Rhee

Summary: Genomic and transcriptomic profiling of parathyroid tissues revealed multiple two-hit mutation patterns in the CDC73 gene, suggesting potential therapeutic targets. Transcriptomic analysis identified upregulated expression of E2F targets, KRAS and TNF-alpha signaling, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition pathways in parathyroid carcinomas. A molecular classification model based on carcinoma-specific genes could effectively distinguish between carcinomas, adenomas, and normal tissues, with potential clinical utility.
