We conducted a matched case-control study of hip fracture in older adults. Our findings suggest that hip fracture risk was determined by multiple factors. Older women characterized by low consumption of milk, peak flow rate, grip strength, and bone mineral density (BMD) had increased risk of hip fracture. Older men with impaired cognitive function and low BMD were also at higher risk of hip fracture. Multiple factors contribute to low-trauma hip fracture in older adults. The aim of this study was to determine important characteristics of hip fracture in older population. A total of 228 patients with first low-trauma hip fracture were matched with 497 controls. All 77 potential risk factors of hip fracture organized into 13 groups were analyzed using conditional logistic regression. Low milk intake, peak flow rate, hand grip strength, and bone mineral density in women and low mini-mental state examination score and bone mineral density in men were further identified to be independently associated with elevated hip fracture risk. The factors found in our study may help understand the etiology of hip fracture and be further adopted to evaluate the risk of hip fracture in community and clinical setting.

Total skeletal, psoas and rectus abdominis muscle mass as prognostic factors for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma

Chih-Horng Wu, Po-Chin Liang, Chih-Hung Hsu, Fang-Tsu Chang, Yu-Yun Shao, Tiffany Ting-Fang Shih

Summary: The study investigated whether low skeletal muscle mass (LSMM) defined according to different muscle groups on computed tomography (CT) scans are predictive factors of survival for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Muscle area indices such as TSM, PM, and RA can serve as standards for LSMM diagnosis, with LSMM patients exhibiting poorer overall survival.

Computed tomography-based sarcopenia in patients receiving peritoneal dialysis: Correlation with lean soft tissue and survival

Chih Horng Wu, Chia Ter Chao, Po Chin Liang, Tiffany Ting Fang Shih, Jenq Wen Huang

Summary: This study evaluated the correlation between computed tomography (CT) based sarcopenia assessment and edema-free lean soft tissue (LST) in patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD), as well as its association with patient prognosis. The results showed a strong correlation between LST and CT assessment of muscle mass. After adjusting for clinical and PD-related parameters, only sarcopenia defined by the psoas muscle (PM) index was associated with poorer survival. Sarcopenia assessment based on CT was found to be an important predictor of prognosis in long-term PD patients.

Summary: The study found that in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma, higher slope, K-ep, and ADC values were associated with longer progression-free survival (PFS); smaller tumor size, higher slope, ADC, and f values were associated with longer overall survival (OS).

Early Changes in DCE-MRI Biomarkers May Predict Survival Outcomes in Patients with Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma after Sorafenib Failure: Two Prospective Phase II Trials

Bang-Bin Chen, Zhong-Zhe Lin, Yu-Yun Shao, Chiun Hsu, Chih-Hung Hsu, Ann-Lii Cheng, Po-Chin Liang, Tiffany Ting-Fang Shih

Summary: In patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after progression from 1st-line sorafenib treatment, early changes in DCE-MRI biomarkers may predict survival outcomes during 2nd-line targeted therapy. Participants with high reductions in Delta Peak and Delta AUC on days 3 and 14 of treatment had better progression-free survival (PFS) rates. High reductions in Delta Peak, Delta AUC, and Delta K-trans on day 14 were associated with higher PFS and overall survival (OS) values, indicating the potential of DCE-MRI biomarkers as predictive tools for treatment outcomes.

Muscle Microcirculatory Responses to Incremental Exercises Are Correlated with Peak Oxygen Uptake in Individuals With and Without Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Yan-Jhen Lu, Ssu-Yuan Chen, Ying-Chuen Lai, Pakaratee Chaiyawat, Yuan-Hung Chao, Lee-Ming Chuang, Tiffany Ting-Fang Shih, Hsing-Kuo Wang

Summary: This study investigated the role of impaired oxygen extraction on peak oxygen uptake using noninvasive and indirect methods in participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and control group. The study found that T2DM patients had lower values in peak oxygen uptake, peak workload, peak heart rate, peak minute ventilation, and muscle oxygenation compared to the control group. The study also observed a correlation between changes in muscle oxygenation and peak oxygen uptake.

Summary: This study used a 2-D radiofrequency-based ultrasound speckle tracking algorithm (UST) to quantify the gliding of finger flexor tendons (FFT) after repair and evaluate tendon recovery. The results showed that the affected side had less gliding and smaller active range of motion compared to the healthy side. Additionally, a significant correlation between tendon gliding and passive range of motion was only found on the healthy side.
