The solid-state structures of Et4Sb2 (1) and Et4Bi2 (2) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single crystals of 1 and 2 were grown in a closed quartz glass capillary under an inert argon atmosphere on the diffractometer using a specific IR-laser-assisted technique. 1 shows short intermolecular Sb center dot center dot center dot Sb interactions, whereas the closest Bi center dot center dot center dot Bi distances are longer than the sum of the van der Waals radii.

Geminal C-Cl and Si-Cl bond activation of chloromethanes and chlorositanes by gattanediyl LGa

Christoph Helling, Chelladurai Ganesamoorthy, Christoph Woelper, Stephan Schulz

Summary: The activation of E-X sigma-bonds by gallanediyl LGa (L = HC[C(Me)N(Dip)](2), Dip = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3) has been confirmed in this study. Reactions of LGa with chloromethanes and chlorosilanes EHxCl4-x (E = C, x = 0-2; E = Si, x = 0, 1) resulted in E-Cl bond insertion and the formation of gallylmethanes and -silanes. Consecutive insertion into a geminal E-Cl bond was observed with two equivalents of LGa.

Crystal Plane-Related Oxygen-Evolution Activity of Single Hexagonal Co3O4 Spinel Particles

Swapnil Varhade, E. B. Tetteh, Sascha Saddeler, Simon Schumacher, H. B. Aiyappa, Georg Bendt, Stephan Schulz, Corina Andronescu, Wolfgang Schuhmann

Summary: Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images of droplet landing sites are correlated with the electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolyte of hexagonal spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles derived using scanning electrochemical cell microscopy. The turnover frequency (TOF) of surface Co atoms is used to deconvolute the intrinsic catalytic activity of individual crystal facets of the hexagonal Co3O4 spinel particle. The top surface exposing 111 crystal planes showed a thickness-dependent TOF, while the edge of the particle exposing (110) planes showed a higher average TOF and no correlation with particle thickness.

Reactions of Zinc Hydride with Silylenes: From Oxidative Addition to Ligand Exchange Reactions

Bin Li, Hanns Micha Weinert, Christoph Woelper, Stephan Schulz

Summary: Oxidative addition reactions of LZnH with L1Si and L2SiNMe2 yielded L1Si(H)-ZnL (1) and LH2Si(NMe2)ZnL (3), while the reaction with L2SiCl proceeded with H/Cl ligand exchange and the formation of L2Si(H)-Zn(Cl)L (2). Protonation reaction of 1 with H-(OEt2)2BArF4 gave LS(H)-ZnL (4). The nature of the Zn-Si bond in 1-4 was evaluated by quantum chemical calculations, showing that the Si-Zn bond in 1 and 3 is covalent, while those in 2 and 4 are better described as dative bonds.

Syntheses and Structures of 5-Membered Heterocycles Featuring 1,2-Diphospha-1,3-Butadiene and Its Radical Anion

Mahendra K. Sharma, Hanns M. Weinert, Bin Li, Christoph Woelper, Justin T. Henthorn, George E. Cutsail III, Gebhard Haberhauer, Stephan Schulz

Summary: Based on DFT calculations, LGa(P2OC)cAAC 2 possesses a delocalized p-type HOMO and p*-type LUMO due to the presence of a 1,2-diphospha-1,3-butadiene moiety. Reaction of 2 with KC8 and dibenzo-18-crown-6 led to the isolation of [LGa(P2OC)cAAC][K(DB-18-c-6)] 3[K(DB-18-c-6] containing the 1,2-diphospha-1,3-butadiene radical anion 3*. Further reactions of 3 with [Fc][B(C6F5)(4)] and TEMPO yielded 2 and [L-HGa-(P2OC)cAAC][K(DB-18-c-6)] 4[K(DB-18-c-6] respectively, with the latter containing the 1,2-diphospha-1,3-butadiene anion 4-. The structures of 2, 3[K(DB-18-c-6], and 4[K(DB-18-c-6] were determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD).
