The synthesis and characterization of the thiophene-bridged diamidophosphine proligand [NPN]H-S(2) (2) (where [NPN]H-S(2) = {[N-(2,4,6-Me3C6H2)(3-NH-SC4H2-2-)](2)PPh}) along with several [NPN](ZrX2)-Zr-S (X = NMe2, Cl, I) complexes are presented. The ligand precursor [NPN]H-S(2) was prepared from N-(2,4,6-Me3C6H2)(3-NH-4-Br-SC4H2) (1),(BuLi)-Bu-t, and PhPCl2 in Et2O in 50% yield; the stereochemistry of the ligand precursor was unexpected and likely resulted from a competitive bromine-lithium exchange and deprotonation sequence with the thiophene starting material I and (BuLi)-Bu-t. A mechanism to rationalize the observed stercochemistry of the product is proposed following deuteration experiments. [NPN]Zr-S(NMe2)(2) (8) can be prepared in 80% yield by the direct reaction of [NPN]H-S(2) and Zr(NMe2)(4) in toluene. Both [NPN](ZrCl2)-Zr-S (9) and [NPN](ZrI2)-Zr-S (10) are prepared in high yield by the reaction of 8 with excess Me3SiCl or Me3SiI, respectively.

Multiple N-H and C-H Hydrogen Atom Abstractions Through Coordination-Induced Bond Weakening at Fe-Amine Complexes

Zongheng Wang, Samantha Johnson, Guang Wu, Gabriel Menard

Summary: This study demonstrates the generation of new Fe-phthalocyanine-amine complexes through reactions with stable radicals, highlighting catalytic processes and bond weakening in alkylamine congeners. Detailed computational studies reveal an alternating mechanism involving N-H and C-H HAA in producing unsaturated products.

Carborane Stabilized 19-Electron Molybdenum Metalloradical

Kuldeep Jaiswal, Naveen Malik, Boris Tumanskii, Gabriel Menard, Roman Dobrovetsky

Summary: In this study, the successful synthesis and characterization of the first persistent, formally 19-e Mo radical was achieved through photodissociation reaction, with the stabilization of the radical attributed to the unique electron-withdrawing effect of the o-carboranyl substituent at the phosphorus center.

Extensive Redox Non-Innocence in Iron Bipyridine-Diimine Complexes: a Combined Spectroscopic and Computational Study

Ranjeesh Thenarukandiyil, Eno Paenurk, Anthony Wong, Natalia Fridman, Amir Karton, Raanan Carmieli, Gabriel Menard, Renana Gershoni-Poranne, Graham de Ruiter

Summary: Metal-ligand cooperation is crucial in earth-abundant metal catalysis, with ligands acting as electron reservoirs to enhance redox chemistry. Iron BDI complexes were found to exhibit a wide range of oxidation states, with structural characterization revealing the redox noninnocence of the BDI ligand. Spectroscopic and computational studies further elucidated the electronic structure of the isolated complexes.

Dyeing to Carry Charge: Commercial Phthalocyanine Dyes as Charge Carriers for Redox Flow Battery Applications

Maxwell Mattejat, Madeline Peterson, Arunavo Chakraborty, Gabriel Menard

Summary: In this study, the performance metrics of a series of synthesized or commercially available inexpensive phthalocyanine metal (PcM) charge carriers were compared. It was found that most metal phthalocyanine complexes are suitable for slurry-based PcM/KB RFB applications. Among these, PcCu showed the highest efficiencies, energy density, stability, and lowest cost.

Facile Synthesis of (C6F5)2BBr and (C6F5)2BX(OEt2) (X=Cl, Br) using Hydrogen Halides and Piers' Borane

Anthony Wong, Gustavo Alcantara, Matthew Avalos, Guang Wu, Gabriel Menard

Summary: We report a facile and efficient method for the synthesis of common electrophilic haloboranes through a protonolysis reaction between Piers' borane, HB(C6F5)(2), and H-X (X=Cl, Br). This route offers fast reaction times, easy setup, and minimal workup, yielding analytically pure etherates, (C6F5)(2)BCl(OEt2) (1) and (C6F5)(2)BBr(OEt2) (2), as well as ether-free tri-coordinate species, (C6F5)(2)BBr (3).

Rapid Aqueous Ammonia Oxidation to N-2 Using a Molecular Ru Electrocatalyst

Samuel I. Jacob, Arunavo Chakraborty, Ali Chamas, Richard Bock, Lior Sepunaru, Gabriel Menard

Summary: The storage of renewable energy in ammonia (NH3) is considered as a viable alternative to hydrogen (H2) in the transition from fossil fuels. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are the leading technology for direct ammonia fuel cells (DAFCs), but their high temperature operation is not suitable for light-duty vehicles. Aqueous-fed DAFCs have gained interest, but there is a lack of reported molecular catalysts to address challenges in reaction selectivity, catalyst loading, and stability. This study presents the use of a known complex, [Ru(bipyridinedicarboxylate)(4-methylpyridine)(2)] (RuBda, 1), to efficiently electrocatalyze the oxidation of aqueous NH3 to N2, with high faradaic efficiencies (>80%), unprecedented rates, and high turnover. Kinetic analyses suggest a unimolecular mechanism, making this catalyst highly applicable for commercially viable fuel cells.

Selective heterogeneous capture and release of actinides using carborane-functionalized electrodes

Maxwell Mattejat, Gabriel Menard

Summary: We present the heterogenization of molecular compounds, ortho-substituted carboranes (Cb-PO, Cb-PO-Pyr), for selective metal capture via electrochemical switching. Films of Cb-PO and Cb-PO-Pyr on glassy carbon and carbon fiber electrodes exhibited heterogeneous electrochemical behavior, which was enhanced by the incorporation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Galvanostatically charged CF|CNT|Cb-PO and CF|CNT|Cb-PO-Pyr electrodes selectively captured and released actinide metal ions (Th4+, UO22+) from mixed solutions containing alkali (Cs+), lanthanide (Nd3+, Sm3+), and actinide (Th4+, UO22+) metal ions.

Facile proton-coupled electron transfer enabled by coordination-induced E-H bond weakening to boron

Anthony Wong, Arunavo Chakraborty, Deependra Bawari, Guang Wu, Roman Dobrovetsky, Gabriel Menard

Summary: The paper discusses the facile activation of aryl E-H or ammonia N-H bonds via coordination-induced bond weakening to a redox-active boron center in the complex. Significant decreases in E-H bond dissociation free energies were observed upon substrate coordination, enabling subsequent proton-coupled electron transfer. Experimental results showed a drop of over 50 kcal mol(-1) in H2N-H bond dissociation free energy upon coordination.
