Reaction of Pd(OAc)(2) with the Schiff base ligands 2,3,4-(MeO)(3)C6H2C(H)=N-[9,10-(C8H16-O-5]C6H3] (a) and 2,3,4-(MeO)(3)C6H2C(H)=N[9,10-(C10H20O6)C6H3] (b) leads to the cyclometalated compounds [Pd{2,3,4-(MeO)(3)C6HC(H)=N-[9,10-(C8H16O5)C6H3]-C-6,N}(mu-O2CMe)](2) (1a) and [Pd{2,3,4-(MeO)(3)C6HC(H)=N[9,10-(C10H20O6)C6H3]-C-6,N}(mu-O2CMe)](2) (1b), respectively, via C-H activation. The metathesis reaction of la with aqueous tetrabutylammonium chloride gave the corresponding cyclopalladated dimer with bridging chloride ligands, 2a. Treatment of the dimer compounds with NaClO4, KClO4, NH4PF6, Pb(SCN)(2), RbClO4, and Ba(ClO4)(2) gave the corresponding products in which the cation (Na+, K+, NH4+, Pb2+, Rb+, Ba2+) was coordinated to the crown ether moiety. The structures of compounds la and 6a (a complex with one Na+ cation coordinated to each crown ether group) have been determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis.

Summary: Through a wet-chemistry route, we have effectively doped the ferroelectric compound CHA(2)PbBr(4) with Mn2+, resulting in materials with interesting crystal structures, photoluminescence, and selectivity towards volatile organic compounds. These Mn-doped compounds exhibit potential for multifunctional applications in various fields.

Cyclometallated Platinum(II) Complexes with Small Crown Ether Rings: Appropriate Choice of the Bridging Diphosphane to Coordinate Potassium Cations

Fatima Lucio-Martinez, Jose M. Vila, Francisco Reigosa, Brais Bermudez, Harry Adams, M. Teresa Pereira

Summary: The synthesis and structural characterization of the first cyclometallated platinum(II) complex coordinating a potassium cation in a sandwich arrangement via two 15-crown-5 ether rings within the same molecule are reported. The importance of choosing the right diphosphane ligand in obtaining double nuclear platinacycles is highlighted. Density functional theory calculations reveal similar affinities for both dppm and vdpp derivatives to coordinate potassium cations.

Student-Generated Videos to Promote Understanding of Chemical Reactions

Alberto A. . Fernandez, Margarita Lopez-Torres, Jesus J. Fernandez, Digna Vazquez-Garcia

Summary: Students created videos of ordinary reactions to enhance their understanding of complex concepts in chemical transformations. Interactive infographics were used for instruction delivery, and students used their mobile phones to plan and record the experiment. The videos and an online questionnaire created by the students were shared on the visual platform Padlet. The activity helped improve students' comprehension of chemical equations, as shown by improved marks in related questions.
