Summary: This study demonstrated the solid-state right-handed helical propensity of the 4(13)-helix of L-alpha/L-sulfono-gamma-AA peptides, even as short as 11-mer, using high-resolution X-ray single crystallography. The atomic level folding conformation of the foldamers was elucidated by 2D NMR and circular dichroism, showing that the helical handedness of this class of foldamer is controlled by the chirality of their chiral side chains.

Summary: Fusarium graminearum is the causative agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB), a disease that leads to significant reduction in wheat yield and poses health risks due to mycotoxins in infected grains. Plant defensins are small basic peptides with conserved structures that play a role in host defense, and novel antifungal peptides designed from DefSm2 exhibit promising activity against F. graminearum, suggesting potential for development as fungicidal agents.

Summary: In this study, it was found that treatment with the reduced form of the tick defensin DefMT3's gamma-core, referred to as TickCore3 (TC3), can decrease Fusarium graminearum growth and suppress mycotoxin production. Molecular dynamics revealed that TC3 is recruited by specific membrane phospholipids in F. graminearum, and the oxidized form of TC3 loses activity. Capping the cysteine residues of TC3 with methyl groups reduces its inhibitory efficacy.

Summary: Circular dichroism is a conventional method for studying the secondary structures of peptides and proteins. The polyproline-II helix, while not exhibiting strictly conserved spectroscopic appearance, is significantly influenced by the surrounding solvent environment. Changes in solvation can lead to shifts and variations in the circular dichroism spectra, with new features potentially emerging in nonpolar environments. Additionally, the transition to a transmembrane state in isotropic liposomes is correlated with specific spectral changes, indicating the importance of considering the solvent environment in assessing circular dichroism spectra.

Summary: In this study, aromatic monoamines were grafted onto gamma-poly(glutamic acid) to enhance intracellular trehalose uptake in human red blood cells. The amphiphilic gamma-PGA nanoparticles showed increased membrane permeability of trehalose, resulting in improved cryosurvival of hRBCs. Molecular dynamics simulation confirmed the interaction of the polymers with the phospholipid bilayer, suggesting a potential approach for glycerol-free cryopreservation of human cells.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of electronic coupling through biaryl linkers on the excited-state symmetry breaking of hybrid dyes. It is found that strengthening the donor-acceptor electronic coupling decreases the charge transfer rates and the propensity for symmetry breaking. In cases of intermediate electronic coupling, the dyes exhibit white fluorescence.

Summary: Nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) can incorporate nonproteinogenic amino acids into peptidyl backbones to increase structural diversity. This study identified a class of linear lipoheptapeptides featuring two unusual residues and revealed the β-hydroxylation mechanisms of Asp and His, which require the concerted action of specific enzymes and domains.

Summary: This study focused on improving the photostability of avobenzone by adopting a skeletal modification approach and synthesizing new derivatives. The new avobenzone derivatives showed improved photostability, rapid recovery from degradation products, and enhanced response to the photostabilizer glutathione compared to the original avobenzone. Computational calculations using density functional theory supported the experimental observations, suggesting that these new derivatives could potentially serve as alternatives to avobenzone in sunscreen formulations.
