Summary: Metal-polarized aza-ortho-quinone methides (aza-o-QMs) have been effectively utilized in azaheterocycle synthesis, and a new reaction mode involving transient dearomatized spiroaziridine intermediates has been discovered. This has led to the efficient and flexible divergent synthesis of bis-nitrogen heterocycles through sequential dearomatization-rearomatization reactions. Experimental, theoretical, and cellular evaluations have been conducted to explain the mechanisms, selectivity, and potential medicinal applications of the synthesized compounds.

Summary: The catalytic asymmetric [2 + 4] cycloadditions of 3-vinylindoles with ortho-quinone methides using chiral phosphoric acid as the catalyst resulted in a series of indole-containing chroman derivatives with high structural diversity, overall high yields (up to 98%), good diastereoselectivities (up to 93:7 dr), and moderate to excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98% ee).

Monte Carlo simulations indicate these voids preferentially allocate n-hexane, suggesting potential applications as selective hosts for small molecules.

Summary: Organic donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) polymers or small molecules are extensively examined in organic solar cells for their favorable properties. However, the study of conjugated small molecules with D-A-D structures as photocatalytically active materials is limited. This research demonstrates that the photocatalytic activity can be influenced by tuning the donor and acceptor units. In particular, the EBE trimer exhibits the best photophysical, chemical, and photocatalytic properties compared to other D-A-D combinations. The results suggest that organic small molecules with D-A-D structures offer new potential for efficient solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

Summary: An organocatalyzed asymmetric formal [4+2] annulation of ortho-hydroxyl functionalized p-quinone methides with beta-keto acylpyrazoles has been developed, providing an efficient approach to access optically active 3,4-dihydrocoumarins. The reactions demonstrate good yields, high levels of diastereo- and enantio-selectivities under mild reaction conditions.

Summary: Inspired by the structure of penguin feathers and polar bear hairs, a bionic solar evaporator (BSE) with macroporous skeleton and macro patulous channels has been designed for efficient water transportation and rapid steam extraction. The 3D hierarchical isotropic truss structures enable omnidirectional light absorption and the bimodal pores facilitate ion diffusion to suppress salt deposits. The BSE exhibits high efficiency and salt resistance, making it suitable for practical sewage purification and desalination applications.

Summary: In this report, the first enantioselective total synthesis of (-)-berkeleyone A and its five congeners is presented, achieved in 12-15 steps starting from commercially available 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoic acid hydrate. The synthesis features symmetry-breaking reactions and complex framework formation, while biomimetic investigations revealed rearrangements responsible for the diversification of (-)-berkeleyone A into its congeners.

The synthesis involved important reactions such as the enantioselective deconjugative alpha-alkylation using chiral lithium amides as stereodirecting auxiliaries, the HfCl4-mediated carbonyl alpha-tert-alkylation to form the intricate bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane framework, an abiotic cascade pyran formation, and a selective 1,4-semihydrogenation of polyenes.
