The synthesis and characterisation of new trans 2-(thiophen-2-yl) vinyl pyridinium, imidazolium and quinoilinium iodides is reported together with their solvatochromic shifts and EFISH characterization. 2-{(E)-2-[5'-(dibutylamino)-2,2'-bithien-5-yl]vinyl}-1-methyl pyridinium and quinolinium iodides display high mu.beta(vec) values up to 1200 x 10(-48) esu. The promising non-linear optical (NLO) properties of this new family of chromophores, which can be further improved by the design of highly efficient systems exploiting the donor and acceptor properties of both heteroaromatic rings and substituents, make them suitable candidates for second harmonic generation imaging with interesting biological applications.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) lead to over 17 million deaths globally each year, with arterial thrombosis being a significant contributor. Platelets play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of these diseases, and modulating their activity is an effective treatment strategy for thrombotic events. Research on inhibitors targeting COX-1 and COX-2 activity show potential for selective inhibition and new therapeutic approaches for cardiovascular diseases.

Metal complexes with sterically demanding phenanthroline ligands: A combined spectroscopic study

Gabriele Valora, Carmela Bonaccorso, Alessio Cesaretti, Cosimo G. Fortuna, Anna Spalletti, Fausto Elisei

Summary: This study thoroughly investigated the interactions between a series of sterically hindered phenanthroline derivatives and first-row transition metal ions through a combined spectroscopic study. The research found that the fluorescence emission quenching of these compounds is highly sensitive to the presence of cations, which can be utilized for analytical purposes. Additionally, femtosecond transient absorption measurements revealed unique excite state dynamics depending on the charge density of the metal ions considered.

Lighting-Up the Far-Red Fluorescence of RNA-Selective Dyes by Switching from Ortho to Para Position

Alessio Cesaretti, Eleonora Calzoni, Nicolo Montegiove, Tommaso Bianconi, Martina Alebardi, Maria Antonietta La Serra, Giuseppe Consiglio, Cosimo Gianluca Fortuna, Fausto Elisei, Anna Spalletti

Summary: Fluorescence imaging is seeking new far-red emitting probes that selectively respond to specific biological targets. Cationic push-pull dyes, with their intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character and strong interaction with nucleic acids, show promise in meeting these requirements. In this study, two isomers of push-pull dimethylamino-phenyl dyes were examined for their ICT dynamics, DNA/RNA affinity, and in vitro behavior. The para-quinolinium derivative exhibited RNA-selectivity, localizing in nucleoli and mitochondria with fluorescence microscopy. It also showed potential as a theranostic agent with improved turn-on response and localized staining ability.

Different In Silico Approaches Using Heterocyclic Derivatives against the Binding between Different Lineages of SARS-CoV-2 and ACE2

Summary: In recent years, the study of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and its mutations has become crucial in understanding its interaction with human host receptors. Through in silico studies, it has been found that heterocyclic compounds with different chemical characteristics may interact with the spike protein and disrupt the interaction between ACE2 and the spike protein. Although further research is needed, this study suggests that these heterocyclic push-pull compounds could potentially inhibit spike protein-ACE2 binding.

Uptake Routes and Biodistribution of Polystyrene Nanoplastics on Zebrafish Larvae and Toxic Effects on Development

Martina Contino, Greta Ferruggia, Roberta Pecoraro, Elena Maria Scalisi, Gianfranco Cavallaro, Carmela Bonaccorso, Cosimo Gianluca Fortuna, Antonio Salvaggio, Fabiano Capparrucci, Teresa Bottari, Maria Violetta Brundo

Summary: Polystyrene (PS) is a widely used plastic polymer, mainly for disposable products. Due to its resistance to degradation, PS can remain in the environment for a long time. This study found that nanoplastics made of amino-modified polystyrene (nPS-NH2) could bioaccumulate in the head, especially in the eyes, after being internalized. Moreover, their interaction with receptors could lead to oxidative stress and apoptosis in the bioaccumulated regions. This study confirms the danger of nanoplastic wastes released into the environment.

Summary: This study investigated the excited-state dynamics and nonlinear optical properties of two symmetrical quadrupolar cationic push-pull compounds with different lateral electron donors, as well as their dipolar counterparts. The research found that excited-state symmetry breaking in the quadrupolar compounds significantly affects their nonlinear optical properties and two-photon absorption ability.
