Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate levels of matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) and substance P (SP) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) during root canal treatment (RCT) of nonvital teeth. Study design. Patients scheduled for nonsurgical RCT were prospectively selected; all patients provided informed consent. GCF samples were collected from teeth scheduled for RCT and their contralateral teeth across 3 different time periods. MMP-8 and SP levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Data were analyzed using a mixed model analysis and the Pearson correlation analysis. Results. Patients' subjective pain levels were significantly related to both MMP-8 and SP levels. MMP-8 and SP levels in GCF were decreased during RCT, and they showed a positive correlation with each other (P < .05). Conclusions. This study demonstrated that periradicular inflammation of endodontic origin can elevate SP and MMP-8 levels in GCF. (Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol Endod 2011;112:548-554)

Summary: The study showed that mechanical vibration at 150 rpm could transiently reduce the osteogenic potential of human periodontal ligament stem cells and promote the formation of PDL-like tissue. This suggests that 150-rpm MVS may be a therapeutic approach to prevent ankylosis and improve PDL healing after tooth replantation and transplantation.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the volume percentage of filling voids in root canals prepared with a newly introduced rotary system, TruNatomy, and obturated by the modified continuous wave (CW) or single cone (SC) filling technique. The results showed that the SC group had a lower volume percentage of filling voids compared to the CW group.

Summary: This randomized controlled clinical trial compared the clinical efficacy and outcome of a sealer-based obturation technique with calcium silicate sealers and a continuous wave of condensation technique with a resin-based sealer. The study found no significant differences between the two techniques and noted that sealer extrusion and postoperative pain can negatively impact the prognosis of endodontic treatment.

Comparison of Root Filling Quality of Two Types of Single Cone-Based Canal Filling Methods in Complex Root Canal Anatomies: The Ultrasonic Vibration and Thermo-Hydrodynamic Obturation versus Single-Cone Technique

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of ultrasonic vibration and thermo-hydrodynamic obturation (VibraTHO) using two different root canal sealers with the single-cone technique and a calcium silicate-based root canal sealer in complex root canal anatomies. The results suggest that the VibraTHO technique using GuttaFlow 2 may be more suitable for anatomically complex root canal systems, while the VibraTHO technique using Endoseal TCS has limited impact on improving root filling quality.

Influence of Phosphoric Acid Etching on Bond Strength for Calcium Silicate-Based Sealers

Joo-Yong Lee, Su-Jung Shin, Jeong-Won Park

Summary: This study evaluated the microtensile bond strength of calcium silicate-based sealers and epoxy resin-based sealer, depending on the use of phosphoric acid (PA) etching before immediate resin restoration. The results showed that the bond strength of water-washed dentin surfaces in the calcium silicate-based sealer groups did not differ significantly from those of the control surfaces, whereas the PA-pretreated surfaces exhibited relatively low bond strength.

Effect of icariin surface treatment on the resorption of denuded roots after replantation in rat

Ahmed Elhakim, Sunil Kim, Su-Jung Shin, Han-Sung Jung, Euiseong Kim

Summary: In this study, the authors investigated the effect of icariin on reducing root resorption and promoting functional healing of denuded roots in a rat model of tooth replantation. The results showed that icariin had a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the differentiation of osteoclasts and enhanced osteogenic activity in stem cells. Micro-CT imaging and histological analysis confirmed the effectiveness of icariin in reducing root resorption and improving tooth retention and survival.
