One changing and challenging scenario: the treatment of cancer patients with bone metastases by bisphosphonates and denosumab, the cost-benefit evaluation of different options, and the risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ)

Vittorio Fusco, Giuseppina Campisi, Alberto Bedogni

Summary: Antiresorptive drugs play a crucial role in the treatment of bone metastases in solid cancer patients. However, the choice of drugs and treatment options pose challenges in decision making. The underestimation of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) risk and the need for long-term risk stratification based on actuarial data are important considerations. Surgical therapy also plays a significant role in improving the quality of life and survival of patients.

Site-Coded Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Evaluation by Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): A Descriptive Pilot Study

Vera Panzarella, Fortunato Buttacavoli, Alessio Gambino, Giorgia Capocasale, Olga Di Fede, Rodolfo Mauceri, Vito Rodolico, Giuseppina Campisi

Summary: Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a promising non-invasive method for oral diagnostics. However, there is a lack of systematic comparisons between clinical/histological and OCT parameters, especially in reference to the anatomical site-codification of the oral mucosa. In this study, suspected OSCCs were evaluated using both in vivo OCT and histological investigations, with the OCT images of the same site-coded healthy mucosa as references. The results revealed site-specific OCT patterns in OSCCs, indicating potential for the reliable use of OCT in oral cancer diagnosis.

Chemopreventive and Anticancer Role of Resveratrol against Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Giuseppe Angellotti, Giulia Di Prima, Elena Belfiore, Giuseppina Campisi, Viviana De Caro

Summary: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a prevalent and aggressive cancer, and conventional treatments have limitations. Resveratrol (RSV), a natural compound, has shown potential for treating OSCC due to its antiproliferative, antimetastatic, and proapoptotic effects. RSV also synergizes with chemotherapeutics and overcomes drug resistance. However, there is a lack of specific investigations on RSV's effects in different administration routes and vehicles. RSV-loaded liposomes have demonstrated efficacy against OSCC models, suggesting the development of drug delivery systems as a turning point in oral cancer treatment.
