Summary: The study found that the survival time of restorations and teeth is significantly shortened in patients with dry mouth. Particularly, the survival time of large composites is short in dry mouth patients, while fixed prosthetic crowns have acceptable survival time in this patient group.

Summary: Taste dysfunction and dry mouth are common symptoms in cancer patients. This review explores the physiological relationship between saliva and taste, as well as the impact of cancer treatments on saliva function and taste. It also summarizes the literature on the association between taste dysfunction and dry mouth in cancer patients, including the effects of treatments for dry mouth symptoms on taste function.

Summary: Patients in short-term psychiatric wards experience negative impacts on their oral health and nutrition, which further complicates their lives. Evaluation and adjustment of oral health and nutrition are essential to improve overall care for these patients.

Summary: This study examines the impact of systemic medications and polypharmacy on saliva flow rates in patients with xerostomia. The results show that taking certain medications, especially from specific drug categories, can lower the flow rates of unstimulated and chewing-stimulated saliva.

Summary: Xerostomia and hyposalivation are common conditions in old age, especially among those with multiple illnesses, often caused by taking multiple medications. These conditions have negative impacts on oral functions and can lead to super-infections and dental problems. Patients with xerostomia often avoid certain foods but some foods may help alleviate symptoms. This review discusses limited evidence on nutritional advice for patients with xerostomia and calls for further research on nutritional intake to improve oral health and quality of life.

Summary: This study aimed to report the prevalence and severity of xerostomia in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and to assess saliva pH in these patients. Results showed that 73.3% of patients had dry mouth, with average salivary flow rate and pH decreasing with the severity of OSA. The study suggested a correlation between salivary parameters and OSA severity.

Summary: This study aimed to examine voice properties in women diagnosed with dry-mouth. The results showed significant differences in fundamental frequency and jitter, but not in shimmer and noise-to-harmonic ratio. Women with dry-mouth had higher scores in self-evaluation and perceived higher voice quality by judges. However, short-term superficial hydration did not significantly improve voice properties. These findings highlight the importance of consistent oral-hydration for voice.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a consensus-based core outcome set (COS) for assessing dry mouth interventions in clinical trials. Through literature reviews and interviews, relevant outcome domains for dry mouth assessment were identified. Consensus was reached for 12 dry mouth outcome domains to be included in the final COS through a two-step consensus process involving healthcare providers and experts in oral medicine.

Summary: It is important to identify the drugs causing xerostomia in elderly patients and the study found that as patients age, the number of medications they take tends to increase, subsequently increasing their risk of xerostomia. Most of the medicines had xerostomia as a side effect, and the quantity of salivation significantly decreased in patients who took more than seven drugs compared to those who did not take medicine.

Summary: Poor oral health is a significant comorbidity in individuals with psychiatric illness, with psychotropic-induced dry mouth being a contributing risk factor. This systematic review found that tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) were associated with more severe dry mouth, while serotonin specific reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were generally associated with milder symptoms. However, there is a lack of research on antipsychotics and newer antidepressants.

Summary: This study evaluated the biofilm formation capability of Candida in xerostomic post-radiation cancer patients and found that the Candida isolates from these patients had a higher ability to form biofilms. Additionally, it was found that higher biofilm formation was associated with low saliva buffering capacity.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of trehalose oral spray on relieving radiation-induced xerostomia. The 10% trehalose spray improved salivary pH, unstimulated salivary flow rate, and quality-of-life dimensions related to physical, pain/discomfort, and psychological signs. The clinical efficacy of 10% trehalose spray was equivalent to CMC-based saliva substitutes for relieving radiation-induced xerostomia.
