Purpose. To compare peripheral lower and higher order aberrations across the horizontal (+/- 40 degrees) and inferior (-20 degrees) visual fields in healthy groups of young and old emmetropes. Methods. We have measured off-axis aberrations in the groups of 30 younger (24 +/- 3 years) and 30 older (58 +/- 5 years) emmetropes. The aberrations of OD were measured using the COAS-HD VR Shack-Hartmann aberrometer in 10 degrees steps to +/- 40 degrees horizontally and -20 degrees inferiorly in the visual field. The aberrations were quantified with Zernike polynomials for a 4 mm pupil diameter. The second-order aberration coefficients were converted to their respective refraction components (M, J(45), and J(180)). Mixed between-within subjects, analysis of variance were used to determine whether there were significant differences in the refraction and aberration components for the between-subjects variable age and the within-subjects variable eccentricity. Results. Peripheral refraction components were similar in both age groups. Among the higher order coefficients, horizontal coma (C-3(1)) and spherical aberration (C-4(0)) varied mostly between the groups. Coma increased linearly with eccentricity, at a more rapid rate in the older group than in the younger group. Spherical aberration was more positive in the older group compared with the younger group. Higher order root mean square increased more rapidly with eccentricity in the older group. Conclusions. Like the axial higher order aberrations, the peripheral higher order aberrations of emmetropes increase with age, particularly coma and spherical aberration. (Optom Vis Sci 2011;88:1088-1098)

Refractive error, axial length, environmental and hereditary factors associated with myopia in Swedish children

Summary: The prevalence of myopia is low among Swedish schoolchildren and genetic and environmental factors are associated with refractive error categories. Children with two myopic parents have higher myopia likelihood and increased axial length compared to those with one or no myopic parents.

Summary: Purpose markers are necessary to increase the diagnostic value of optical coherence tomography angiography by exploring the relationships between structural and microvascular measures. This study investigated these relationships in healthy children's eyes. Foveal thickness, fovea-to-macula thickness ratio (FMTR), and foveal microvasculature measurements were found to be correlated.

Comparison of an open view autorefractor with an open view aberrometer in determining peripheral refraction in children

Pelsin Demir, Antonio Filipe Macedo, Ranjay Chakraborty, Karthikeyan Baskaran

Summary: The purpose of this study was to compare central and peripheral refraction in young children using the Shin-Nippon NVision-K 5001 autorefractor and the COAS-HD VR aberrometer. The results showed that the Shin-Nippon autorefractor measured more hyperopia than the COAS-HD VR for central refraction. The astigmatic components were similar between the two instruments for both central and peripheral refraction.

The intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cell (ipRGC) mediated pupil response in young adult humans with refractive errors

Summary: This study measured the post-illumination pupil response (PIPR) in young adults with different refractive errors using a custom-made optical system. The results showed that refractive error did not have an effect on PIPR, but there was a significant impact of different wavelengths of light stimulation on PIPR.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the effects of stimulation of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) on axial length changes in young adults. The study found that stimulation of ipRGCs using blue light caused an increase in axial length. However, this effect was not observed in myopic defocus conditions.

Reading performance in Portuguese children from second to tenth grade with the MNREAD reading acuity test

Karthikeyan Baskaran, Aurelie Calabrese, Laura Hernandez-Moreno, Diana Santos, Antonio Filipe Macedo

Summary: This study assesses the reading performance of normal sighted Portuguese schoolchildren using the Portuguese version of the MNREAD reading acuity chart and provides normative values. The findings show that reading speed increases with age and school grade, while reading acuity improves initially and then stabilizes in more mature children.
