Generation of a 660-2100 nm laser frequency comb based on an erbium fiber laser

We present a multibranch laser frequency comb based upon a 250 MHz mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser that spans more than 300 THz of bandwidth, from 660 nm to 2100 nm. Light from a mode-locked Er: fiber laser is amplified and then broadened in highly-nonlinear fiber to produce substantial power at similar to 1050 nm. This light is subsequently amplified in Yb:fiber to produce 1.2 nJ, 73 fs pulses at 1040 nm. Extension of the frequency comb into the visible is achieved by supercontinuum generation from the 1040 nm light. Comb coherence is verified with cascaded f-2f interferometry and comparison to a frequency stabilized laser.

Summary: High-resolution observations using the HPF spectrograph reveal the presence of a flaring event in the M8 dwarf vB 10, with a red asymmetry in the He λ10830 triplet similar to coronal rain in the Sun. Time-series analysis of the flare and comparisons with historical observations provide constraints on the energy and frequency of such flares, allowing for an estimation of flare-induced atmospheric mass loss for hypothetical planets around vB 10.

Thermal-light heterodyne spectroscopy with frequency comb calibration

Summary: Precision laser spectroscopy is important for the development of atomic and molecular physics as well as related technologies. In this work, laser-based heterodyne radiometry is used to measure incoherent light sources in the near-infrared, and techniques for absolute frequency calibration with a laser frequency comb are introduced. The solar continuum is measured with a signal-to-noise ratio matching the thermal photon distribution. The study also proposes concepts for reducing pointing instabilities and increasing data acquisition rates and spectral bandwidths using refractive beam shaping and frequency comb multiplexing. These findings have implications for solar and astronomical spectroscopy, remote sensing, and precise Doppler velocimetry.

Summary: We present the discovery of a new Jovian-sized planet, TOI-3757 b, the lowest-density transiting planet known to orbit an M dwarf (M0V). This planet adds to the small sample of gas giants around M dwarfs and provides an opportunity to test theories of planet formation. We propose two hypotheses to explain its low density, namely the low metallicity of its stellar host and tidal heating causing volume expansion. The low density and large scale height of TOI-3757 b make it an excellent target for studying atmospheric escape and composition.

Broadband 1-GHz mid-infrared frequency comb

Summary: Mid-infrared (MIR) spectrometers are essential for studying molecular fingerprinting and hyper-spectral imaging. However, current GHz MIR dual-comb absorption spectrometers lack the ability to combine high speed, high spectral resolution, and broad optical bandwidth. This study introduces a broadband MIR frequency comb laser platform that overcomes these limitations, enabling accurate characterization of complex, transient events in chemistry, combustion, and microscopy.

High-sensitivity frequency comb carrier-envelope-phase metrology in solid state high harmonic generation

Summary: Non-perturbative and phase-sensitive light-matter interactions have been studied to generate attosecond pulses and control electrical currents. The use of solid state crystals combined with low pulse energy frequency combs and high-sensitivity demodulation techniques allows for the measurement of nonlinear effects dependent on the carrier-envelope phase. This research provides robust and ultra-sensitive methods for studying attosecond nonlinear processes in solid state systems.

Summary: We report the discovery of TOI-5205b, a transiting Jovian planet orbiting a solar metallicity M4V star. It has one of the highest mass ratios for M-dwarf planets, and its large size results in one of the deepest transits of a confirmed exoplanet orbiting a main-sequence star. TOI-5205b's high mass challenges conventional theories of planet formation and disk scaling relations.

Summary: We conducted a thorough analysis of the TOI-3884 system, which is a validated M4-dwarf star with a transiting super-Neptune. Through high-precision light curves and radial velocity observations, we determined the planetary mass and radius of TOI-3884b. We also observed a starspot crossing event after every ingress, revealing wavelength dependence and evolving amplitude and duration over time. This system provides a unique opportunity to study the nature of a misaligned super-Neptune and spot evolution on an active mid-M dwarf.

Compact, portable, thermal-noise-limited optical cavity with low acceleration sensitivity

Summary: We have developed and demonstrated a compact portable Fabry-Perot optical reference cavity with a volume of less than 6 mL. The laser locked to the cavity achieves a thermal noise-limited fractional frequency stability of 2 x 10-14. By utilizing an electro-optic modulator for broadband feedback control, our design achieves near thermal-noise-limited phase noise performance from 1 Hz to 10 kHz offset frequencies. The low vibration, temperature, and holding force sensitivity of our design make it suitable for various out-of-the-lab applications such as optically derived low noise microwave generation, compact and mobile optical atomic clocks, and environmental sensing through deployed fiber networks.
