Summary: For the first time, diode-pumped continuous-wave and passively Q-switched Nd:LuAG ceramic microchip lasers at 1064 nm and 1053 nm have been demonstrated. The continuous-wave operation achieved maximum output powers of 1.62 W and 0.75 W for the two lasers, respectively. Using a Cr:YAG crystal as a saturable absorber, the lasers can also operate in passively Q-switched regimes with sub-nanosecond pulse durations of 489 ps and 556 ps, respectively. The all solid-state microchip lasers show great potential for high performance laser generation with sub-nanosecond short pulse duration, high single pulse energy, and high pulse peak power.

Summary: This study presents a high-repetition-rate Er:Yb:YAl3(BO3)(4) microchip laser end-pumped by a 976 nm diode laser, and passively Q-switched by a Co2+:MgAl2O4 crystal. A 1553 nm passively Q-switched laser with a repetition rate of 544 kHz, pulse duration of 8.3 ns, and pulse energy of 3.9 mu J was achieved. The highest reported repetition rate for 1.5 mu m passively Q-switched pulse laser up to date. In a continuous-wave pumping experiment, a maximum repetition rate of 144 kHz, pulse duration of 8.0 ns, and pulse energy of 1.7 mu J was obtained at an incident pump power of 6.3 W.

Summary: This paper presents a Ho:GTO laser dual end-pumped by a laser diode at 1.91 μm, achieving high output power and slope efficiency under CW regime, and utilizing Cr2+:ZnS as a saturable absorber to achieve small pulse width and high repetition rate. The Ho:GTO laser also demonstrated good beam quality factors and was successfully used as the pump source for a mid-infrared ZGP-OPO system, achieving high average output power and slope efficiency.

Summary: A 1.5-1.6 μm pulse laser passively Q-switched by a Co2+:MgAl2O4 crystal was realized in an Er:Yb:Sr3Gd2(BO3)(4) crystal, generating a pulse laser with energy of 9.1 μJ, repetition frequency of 15.6 kHz, and duration of 29 ns. The output laser beam exhibited linear polarization parallel to the Y optical indicatrix axis, making the Er:Yb:Sr3Gd2(BO3)(4) crystal a promising gain medium for 1.5-1.6 μm laser applications.

Summary: We report the generation of the first sub-60 fs pulse from a diode-pumped SESAM mode-locked Yb-laser using a non-centrosymmetric Yb:YAl3(BO3)4 crystal. By utilizing a spatially single-mode, fiber-coupled 976 nm InGaAs laser diode, the laser exhibited a slope efficiency of 65.1% and a wavelength tuning range of 59 nm. With the implementation of a commercial SESAM and a 1 mm-thick laser crystal, the laser achieved pulses as short as 56 fs at a central wavelength of 1044.6 nm.

Summary: A high-performance diode-tandem-pumped actively Q-switched Tm:YAP laser is demonstrated, achieving a maximum output power of 10.6 W with a pulse width of 37 ns, a pulse energy of 2.12 mJ, and a peak power of 57.3 kW at a pulse repetition rate of 5 kHz. Comparatively, an actively Q-switched Tm:YAP laser with a single gain crystal double-end pumped obtains a maximum output power of 6.8 W with a pulse width of 45 ns, a pulse energy of 1.36 mJ, and a peak power of 28.3 kW at the same pulse repetition rate. The experimental results clearly reveal the effect of diode-tandem-pumping regime on lowering down the thermal load of gain medium.

Summary: In this study, a red laser diode-pumped Alexandrite laser with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror for passive Q-switching was presented. By using customized SESAMs, a pulsed Alexandrite laser at 749.6 nm with an average power of 0.904 W, a repetition rate of 20.27 kHz, and a pulse energy of 44.59 μJ was achieved.

Summary: The diode-pumped Tm:LiYF4 laser, passively Q-switched by a Cr2+:ZnSe saturable absorber, achieves a maximum average output power of 130 mW at 2304.6 nm with nearly diffraction limited beam and pulse characteristics of 1.24 µs/3.6 µJ. By power scaling under quasi-CW pumping, shorter pulse durations of 870 ns and higher pulse energies of 6.1 µJ are achieved.

Summary: A sub-nanosecond, diode-stack side-pumped, passively Q-switched Nd3+:YLF4/Cr4+:YAG Laser with a pulse width of 894 ps and peak output power of 46 MW is reported. The focus distance can be adjusted to generate a pulse train with energy ranging from 41 mJ to 111 mJ and optical efficiency of 23.7%. This laser resonator can also emit high-power simultaneous Q-switched laser at 1047 nm and 1053 nm.

Summary: The oxyfluoride-lead-silicate-germanate glass with different compositions were prepared and their spectroscopic properties were studied. A new method for calculating pump efficiency and energy transfer processes was proposed, revealing the dominant role of quadrupole-quadrupole interaction between thulium ions. Laser related properties of the glass, including stimulated emission cross sections and gain spectra, were obtained and discussed.

Summary: In this study, single crystals of yttrium orthoaluminate (YAlO3) activated with Yb3+ ions and additional nonisovalent Li+ and Hf4+ impurities were grown and their spectral characteristics, including those exposed to gamma-ray irradiation, were measured. The results revealed the functional role of additional impurities and showed the efficiency of using these impurities to obtain crystals with low concentration of anion vacancies and associated color centers in YAlO3:Yb. The mechanisms of incorporation and charge compensation of Li+ and Hf4+ ions in YAlO3:Yb were also considered based on the results obtained.

Summary: This article reports the investigation results of the spectroscopic properties of Er3+, Yb3+:YGdSiO5 (YGSO) crystals. The measured spectra include polarized absorption and luminescence spectra, and the lifetimes of energy levels were determined. The stimulated emission and gain cross-section spectra for Er3+ ions in YGSO were also calculated.

Summary: This article presents the latest results of Tm:KYW laser performance with a polycrystalline Cr:ZnSe as the saturable absorber for 2 mu m spectral region. The experiments show that Tm:KYW crystals have promising applications in surgery and rangefinding, and can be used to investigate the damage threshold of saturable absorbers and nonlinear crystals near 2 mu m wavelength.
