A fast and high dynamic range digital fringe projection technique is proposed to achieve fast and effective 3D measurement of shiny workpieces with dense point clouds. The new projector can reach a maximum frame rate of 700 Hz. The dynamic range of the light intensity can vary at least 9 times by using multiple homochromous LED chips and intensity modulation technique. The results of our experiments showed that the projector can reduce 88% of the routine projecting time, and it improves the speed of 3D precise measurement of shiny surface. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
