Macular microvascular changes after intravitreal bevacizumab injection in diabetic macular edema

Reza Mirshahi, Khalil Ghasemi Falavarjani, Saber Molaei, Abbas Habibi, Pasha Anvari, Maryam Ashraf Khorasani, Shahriar Ghasemizadeh, David Sarraf

Summary: The study found that after a single intravitreal injection of bevacizumab, diabetic patients with macular edema did not show significant changes in the retinal capillary plexus and vascular diameter, but the blood flow in the choriocapillaris improved significantly.

The effect of intravitreal recombinant tissue plasminogen activator injection on diabetic tractional fibrovascular membranes: Proposed criteria using optical coherence tomography

Khalil Ghasemi Falavarjani, Pasha Anvari, Mohammadhasan Dehghan Niri, Saber Molaei, Fateme Abdi, Esrafil Shad, Pegah Kazemi, SriniVas R. Sadda

Summary: The study found excellent agreement between graders in quantitative assessment of diabetic tractional fibrovascular membranes (FVM) using proposed OCT criteria. However, no significant change in FVM measurements was observed 1 week after intravitreal tPA injection.

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography and Structural Analyses of the Pale Optic Discs: Is It Possible to Differentiate the Cause?

Kaveh Abri Aghdam, Ali Aghajani, Marjan Razi-Khosroshahi, Mostafa Soltan Sanjari, Samira Chaibakhsh, Khalil Ghasemi Falavarjani

Summary: This study compared optic nerve head structure and microvasculature in patients with different types of optic neuropathy, finding that vessel density and RNFL thickness were significantly lower in patients compared to normal subjects. Positive correlation between RPC vessel density and RNFL thickness was observed across all groups, indicating a potential diagnostic value for structural evaluation of the ONH.

Global burden of paediatric vision impairment: a trend analysis from 1990 to 2017

Parya Abdolalizadeh, Samira Chaibakhsh, Khalil Ghasemi Falavarjani

Summary: The global prevalence of distance and/or near vision impairment for children aged 1-14 in 2017 was 2.8%. The highest DALYs were observed in teenagers, with a positive correlation between DALY rate of refractive disorders and national socioeconomic development. From 1990 to 2015, DALY numbers remained stable but rates showed a significant trend of reduction in all paediatric age groups.

Correlation between global prevalence of vision impairment and depressive disorders

Parya Abdolalizadeh, Khalil Ghasemi Falavarjani

Summary: There is a significant correlation between the global prevalence of visual impairment and depressive disorders, with different age, sex, and socioeconomic subgroups displaying similar correlations.

Baseline retinal vascular bed area on ultra-wide field fluorescein angiography correlates with the anatomical outcome of diabetic macular oedema to ranibizumab therapy: two-year analysis of the DAVE Study

Wenying Fan, Akihito Uji, Charles C. Wykoff, David M. Brown, Jano van Hemert, Khalil Ghasemi Falavarjani, Kang Wang, SriniVas R. Sadda, Michael Ip

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between baseline retinal non-perfusion area (NPA) and retinal vascular bed area (RVBA) with long-term response to intravitreal ranibizumab therapy. The results showed that patients with smaller baseline RVBA had better anatomical outcomes after long-term treatment.

Genetic insights into PHARC syndrome: identification of a novel frameshift mutation in ABHD12

Ahmad Daneshi, Masoud Garshasbi, Mohammad Farhadi, Khalil Ghasemi Falavarjani, Mohammad Vafaee-Shahi, Navid Almadani, MohammadSina Zabihi, Mohammad Amin Ghalavand, Masoumeh Falah

Summary: This study reports a novel mutation in the ABHD12 gene in two siblings with PHARC syndrome phenotypes. The findings expand the spectrum of mutations in ABHD12 and emphasize the importance of collaboration between clinicians and geneticists in diagnosing related disorders.

Unplanned reoperation following vitreoretinal surgery

Ali Akbarzadeh, Amin Zand, Masoud Rahimi, Reza Mirshahi, Mehdi Parvaresh, Khalil Falavarjani

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence and reasons of unplanned reoperations following vitreoretinal surgery. It was found that unplanned reoperations were not very common and mostly occurred in patients with proliferative vitreoretinopathy, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, and tractional retinal detachment. Lower preoperative best-corrected visual acuity may indicate an increased chance of future unplanned reoperations.

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Findings after Acute Intraocular Pressure Elevation in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus versus Healthy Subjects

Maryam Ashraf Khorasani, Giancarlo A. Garcia, Pasha Anvari, Abbas Habibi, Shahriar Ghasemizadeh, Khalil Ghasemi Falavarjani

Summary: Acute rise of intraocular pressure (IOP) may induce different levels of microvascular changes in healthy and diabetic eyes. After IOP elevation, healthy eyes demonstrated a reduction in vessel density in the capillary plexuses, while diabetic eyes showed a significant decrease in foveal vessel density.

Retinotomy and Retinectomy in the Management of Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Associated with Advanced Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy

Amin Zand, Alireza Helal Birjandi, Behrouz Saeedian, Sayyed Amirpooya Alemzadeh, Fatemeh Abdi, Ahad Sedaghat, Mohammad Mehdi Parvaresh, Khalil Ghasemi Falavarjani

Summary: This study investigated the anatomical and functional outcomes of retinotomy and/or retinectomy for the management of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) complicated by advanced proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). The study found that retinotomy with/without retinectomy is effective in the majority of patients with RRD associated with advanced PVR, but additional surgeries are needed in a significant number of eyes to achieve final anatomical success.

Optic pit-like maculopathy in a patient without any detectable disc anomalies

Mahsa Sardarinia, Fatemeh Abdi, Ahad Sedaghat, Pasha Anvari, Mohammad Parvaresh, Khalil Falavarjani

Summary: Macular schisis refers to the splitting of inner retinal layers at the macula, which can be associated with various conditions. Cases of retinoschisis without optic disc pit have been reported, suggesting possible connections between macular neuroretinal tissue and the vitreous cavity. Further studies are needed to explore the mechanisms of this condition with more subjects.
