This study evaluated the histological response and the expression of tenascin (TN) and fibronectin (FN) after pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) or calcium hydroxide (CH). Class V cavities and pulp exposure were performed in 40 primary pig teeth. The pulps were capped with either MTA or CH, and the cavities were sealed with resin-modified glass ionomer cement. CH was used as a control. Seven and 70 days posttreatment, the animals were sacrificed and teeth were prepared for histological evaluation. TN and FN were detected by immunostaining. A severe inflammatory response was observed after 7 days in the CH group (p < 0.043), while in the MTA group, a mild response was observed. Similar reparative dentin deposition was observed after 70 days for both groups (p < 0.005). The expression of FN and TN was similar for both groups in the two periods evaluated. TN and FN were expressed during pulp reparative events, independently of the capping material.

Is the effect of COVID-19 on periodontal treatment similar to that in general dental care and primary medical care? an observational study in Brazil

Luiz Alexandre Chisini, Francine dos Santos Costa, Luana Carla Salvi, Victorio Poletto Neto, Rodrigo Varella de Carvalho, Flavio Fernando Demarco

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the rates of periodontal procedures in the Brazilian Public Health System. It found a significant reduction in the number of periodontal procedures during the pandemic, although the reduction was not as great as that of medical and general dental procedures. Medical procedures experienced the sharpest drop in procedures.

Socioeconomic inequalities related to maternal perception of children's oral health at age 4: Results of a birth cohort

Sarah Arangurem Karam, Francine dos Santos Costa, Marcos Britto Correa, Andrea D. Bertoldi, Fernando C. Barros, Flavio Fernando Demarco

Summary: A study from Brazil's birth cohort revealed socioeconomic disparities in maternal perception of children's oral health and the prevalence of untreated dental caries in children. Poorer families and mothers with lower educational levels were more likely to have negative perceptions of children's oral health.

Causal inference in dentistry: Time to move forward

Helena Silveira Schuch, Gustavo Giacomelli Nascimento, Flavio Fernando Demarco, Dandara Gabriela Haag

Summary: Causal inference plays a crucial role in studying oral health interventions and guiding policy-making by identifying the actual causes of oral conditions. However, methodological deficiencies limit the interpretability and application of findings in oral health research. It is necessary to ask theoretically sound questions, define causal relationships, and accurately measure the outcomes to improve the quality of studies.

Functional dentition and edentulism associated with mortality: A cohort study of older adults in Southern Brazil

Cinthia Fonseca Araujo, Helena Silveira Schuch, Mariana Gonzalez Cademartori, Renata Moraes Bielemann, Andrea Damaso Bertoldi, Elaine Tomasi, Maria Cristina Gonzalez, Flavio Fernando Demarco

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the lack of a functional dentition and edentulism with mortality in a cohort of older adults in a Southern Brazilian city. The findings of this study did not identify an association between edentulism and functional dentition with mortality, after considering important shared risk factors.

Summary: The study found an association between prolonged and frequent breastfeeding and early childhood caries (ECC). It also found that children with high consumption of ultraprocessed foods (UPF) had higher prevalence and experience of ECC. No interaction was observed between prolonged breastfeeding and UPF consumption in relation to ECC.

Effect of naturally derived antioxidants as polymerization inhibitors on experimental adhesive resins

Carlos Enrique Cuevas-Suarez, Eliseu Aldrighi Munchow, Christian Goncalves Schwarzbold, Josiane Kuhn Rutz, Adriana Fernandes da Silva, Evandro Piva

Summary: This study evaluated the properties of adhesive resins modified with different antioxidants as polymerization inhibitors. The results showed that adhesives modified with BHT and AA had lower degree of conversion, while the presence of QC resulted in color changes and higher yellowing index. The addition of GA reduced the cohesive strength of the materials. However, all adhesives demonstrated similar cell viability and translucency compared to the control. The use of alternative antioxidants showed potential for the development of dental adhesive resins without significant impairment of their properties.

Summary: This study examined the effect of unreacted substances of four universal adhesives on cell viability, taking into account different sample preparation protocols. It was found that disc-shaped specimens made with the adhesive material itself led to an overestimation of cell viability outcomes for the universal adhesives. CQ was identified as the most cytotoxic component among the analyzed substances.
