Summary: The study found that Apoptin can significantly increase apoptosis and autophagy in liver cancer cells, and induce mitophagy through the increase of NIX protein expression. Apoptin treatment also leads to a significant increase in cellular ROS levels, which are involved in apoptosis and autophagy of liver cancer cells. The increase in ROS levels may be a key factor causing apoptosis and autophagy.

Summary: This study analyzed multiomics data to construct a regulatory network involving kinases, transcription factors, and immune genes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prognosis. The study identified key immune genes and their relationships, and validated the effects of the CDK1-SRC-HSP90AB1 network on HCC progression and antitumor immunity. The findings highlight the importance of this network in HCC prognosis and immune regulation.

Summary: ASRGL1 is highly expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is associated with poor overall survival. Knockdown of ASRGL1 inhibits cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, and promotes apoptosis in HCC cells. ASRGL1 may be involved in the regulation of the cell cycle in HCC. These findings demonstrate that ASRGL1 blockade functions through cell cycle inhibition to suppress tumor growth in HCC.

Summary: Liver cancer is a common malignancy with drug resistance being a major challenge in treatment. This study demonstrates that Dihydrotanshinone (DHTS) can inhibit the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma by suppressing the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway, suggesting its potential as a chemotherapeutic agent.

Summary: The active metabolite of the antiparasitic drug nitazoxanide, tizoxanide (TIZ), shows antiglioma activity by inducing G2/M cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. It inhibits the proliferation and colony formation of glioblastoma (GBM) cells in vitro and suppresses the growth of GBM in vivo without causing side effects. TIZ targets cycle-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) and inhibits its activity, leading to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis via the ROS-mediated pathway.

Summary: The study investigated different monocationic arylthiophene derivatives as potential chemotherapeutic agents against HCC. Compound 2j showed the highest cytotoxicity among the tested compounds, with a selectivity index indicating safety to normal cells. It was found to inhibit HepG2 cell migration and division, induce apoptosis, and sensitize standard anticancer drugs.

Summary: The pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a complex and multifactorial process that remains incompletely understood. Autophagy and apoptosis are two important cellular pathways that play critical roles in cell survival or death. Dysregulation of the balance between apoptosis and autophagy is commonly observed in HCC and other cancers. Autophagy can either inhibit or promote apoptosis, thereby influencing the fate of liver cancer cells. This review provides a concise overview of the pathogenesis of HCC, highlighting recent developments such as endoplasmic reticulum stress, microRNAs, and gut microbiota. The characteristics of HCC associated with specific liver diseases are discussed, and a brief introduction to autophagy and apoptosis is provided. The role of autophagy and apoptosis in HCC initiation, progression, and metastasis is reviewed, with extensive analysis of experimental evidence pointing to an interplay between these two processes. The role of ferroptosis, a recently described form of regulated cell death, is also presented. Finally, the potential therapeutic implications of autophagy and apoptosis in drug resistance are examined.

Summary: The study revealed that high expression of PCSK9 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is associated with microvascular invasion and large tumor size, leading to poor overall survival and disease-free survival in patients. Experimental findings demonstrated that PCSK9 promotes HCC growth by inhibiting cell apoptosis, with FASN-mediated anti-apoptosis playing a significant role in this process.

Summary: The study revealed that NUPR1 knock-down impaired autophagic flux, increasing cell sensitivity to sorafenib, and activated the p73 signaling pathway, enhancing the anti-tumor effects of the drug. Combined therapy with the p73 activator NSC59984 and sorafenib showed synergistic suppression of tumor growth, suggesting a novel approach for HCC treatment.

Summary: circ_0003528 is overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and knockdown of circ_0003528 suppresses tumor aggressiveness and growth. miR-212-3p functions through interaction with circ_0003528 and XIAP. Knockdown of circ_0003528 may be a potential therapeutic strategy for HCC treatment.

Summary: Cepharanthine (CEP), extracted from Stephania cepharantha Hayata, has shown potential in treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by inhibiting cell migration, proliferation, and inducing apoptosis. Through RNA-seq and GC-MS, CEP was found to affect metabolism-associated pathways and down-regulate metabolites, leading to significant antitumor effects in both in vitro and in vivo experiments.

Summary: This study revealed that Lenvatinib can induce apoptosis in HCC cells by increasing reactive oxygen species levels, with GPX2 identified as a crucial target for Lenvatinib against HCC. It was found that GPX2 was highly expressed in tumor tissues and correlated with poor overall survival in HCC patients. Furthermore, Lenvatinib was shown to inhibit GPX2 expression in HCC cells by preventing the nuclear translocation of β-catenin. These findings suggest that GPX2 may play an important role in Lenvatinib-induced HCC cell apoptosis and can serve as a biomarker for guiding Lenvatinib therapy in HCC patients.
