Objective: Few studies have been conducted on breast cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa and their results have been suspected to be impaired by artefacts. This prospective study was designed to determine tumor and patient characteristics in Mali with control of each methodological step. These data are necessary to define breast cancer treatment guidelines in this country. Methods: Clinical and tumor characteristics and known risk factors were obtained in a consecutive series of 114 patients. Each technical step for the determination of tumor characteristics [histology, TNM, grade, estrogen (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR), HER2, and Ki67] was controlled. Results: Patients had a mean age of 46 years. Most tumors were invasive ductal carcinomas (94%), T3-T4 (90%) with positive nodes (91%), grade III (78%), and ER (61%) and PR (72%) negative. HER2 was overexpressed in 18% of cases. The triple-negative subgroup represented 46%, displaying a particularly aggressive pattern (90% grade III; 88% Ki67 > 20%). Conclusion: This study demonstrates the high incidence of aggressive triple-negative tumors in Mali. Apart from a higher prevalence of premenopausal women, no significant difference in risk factors was observed between triple-negative tumors and other tumors. The hormonal therapy systematically prescribed therefore needs to be revised in light of this study. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Karger AG, Basel

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed data from 112 patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis who underwent lung or heart-lung transplantation, finding that post-transplant survival rates were similar to those with other indications for lung transplantation. Older age and extensive pre-operative lung fibrosis were the main factors associated with worse survival.

Summary: The study identified a negative association between low income and survival and progression-free survival in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), suggesting that low-income IPF patients may be more exposed to occupational exposures.

Summary: The study found that intermittent hypoxia exacerbates lung fibrosis, especially when exposure to hypoxia precedes the induction of lung fibrosis. The enhancement of ER stress markers may be involved in the underlying mechanisms.

Estimation of Regional Pulmonary Compliance in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Based on Personalized Lung Poromechanical Modeling

Summary: Pulmonary function is closely related to lung mechanical behavior, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) affects lung mechanics, thus altering lung function. Currently, the mechanical impact of IPF is only assessed through pressure-volume curves which provide global information. We have developed a personalized poromechanical model of the lung that can diagnose IPF based on clinical data.

Prognostic value of electroencephalographic paroxysms in post-anoxic coma: A new regularity EEG-based score

Summary: This study aimed to identify the features that may predict the outcome of patients with post anoxic coma (PAC) by analyzing electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns. The presence of EEG paroxysms (EP) and their regularity features were strongly associated with poor outcome in PAC patients. A global regularity score derived from visual EEG inspection could be a reliable prognostic tool.

Multiparameter analysis of vascular remodeling in post-acute sequelae of COVID-19

Catalin Fetita, Mathilde Maury, Aurelien Justet, Juliette Dindart, Jean Richeux, Lucile Sese, Nicolas Aide, Thomas Gille, Hilario Nunes, Jean-Francois Bernaudin, Pierre-Yves Brillet

Summary: The study investigates the existence of residual vascular alteration in post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) by analyzing associations between vascular remodeling biomarkers extracted from CT and functional, radiological, and morphological parameters. The results suggest moderate to strong correlations between the biomarkers and the persistence of vascular alterations in PASC, highlighting a promising direction for future research in understanding the development of fibrotic patterns.
