Summary: This study examined the benefits of frailty management in non-geriatric hospital settings, using data from the FRAILCLINIC study. The findings suggest that individualized interventions can reduce the risk of functional decline and mortality in frail inpatients over a three-month period.

Summary: This study aims to investigate whether CGA and care prior to surgery for CRC in frail elderly patients can improve postoperative outcomes. By screening and intervening frail patients aged 70 years and above with surgically curable CRC, the study compares the differences in primary and secondary outcome measures between the intervention group and the control group. This study could provide insights for the future care of frail elderly patients with CRC.

Summary: This study found that frail patients with colorectal cancer may benefit similarly from adjuvant chemotherapy as non-frail patients, and those receiving adjuvant chemotherapy were younger and had better nutritional status in this population. Further clinical trials are needed to establish the role of adjuvant chemotherapy for frail patients with CRC.

Summary: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) aims to determine the medical, psychological, and functional capabilities of older adults in order to develop a coordinated care plan. Studies suggest that CGA may reduce the risk of unplanned hospital admissions in community-dwelling, frail, older adults.

Summary: The study analyzed the quality assessment report of the Korean HIRA regarding CRC treatment and found improvements in relevant medical records, receipt of chemotherapy, and surgical mortality over the past 6 years. Surgical mortality was negatively correlated with regional lymph node resection and examination rate, while it was positively correlated with hospitalization stay and cost.

Summary: In this pilot study, SOST levels were found to be associated with age, cardiovascular comorbidities, and early death in septic patients. SOST showed a high predictive value for 30-day mortality and outperformed validated scoring scales for critically ill patients. The variation in SOST levels also predicted long-term mortality.

Summary: The Dutch Safety Management System (VMS) screening for frail older patients is used to predict adverse outcomes. This retrospective cohort study in geriatric inpatients found that almost all patients scored positive on at least one VMS domain. The number of positive VMS domains had some predictive value for institutionalization, while individual domains were able to predict adverse outcomes.

Summary: In the GERICO study, geriatric interventions compared with standard care increased the number of older, vulnerable patients with colorectal cancer completing adjuvant chemotherapy, and may improve the burden of illness and mobility.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of a geriatric multidisciplinary oncology clinic (GMOC) on the surgical treatment decision-making process and outcomes for colorectal cancer patients. The results showed that proper counseling through GMOC could lead to appropriate treatment management and favorable outcomes.

Summary: This study evaluated the protective effect of oral antidiabetic drugs in a large cohort of elderly patients with type 2 diabetes. Increased adherence to antidiabetic drugs was associated with a reduction in the risk of mortality regardless of the patients' clinical status and age, except for very old patients in the frail clinical category.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the protective effect of statins in a large cohort of frail elderly subjects. The findings showed that adherence to statin treatment reduced the risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality. However, the benefit of statin treatment may be lower in frail elderly patients compared to those in good clinical conditions.

Summary: This paper explores the complexity of medical decision-making for frail geriatric trauma patients, particularly towards the end of life. It reviews aspects such as frailty, cognitive impairment, quality of life, goals of care, and palliative care, while also offering recommendations for composing a patient-tailored treatment plan. Overall, it aims to initiate a much-needed discussion on end-of-life care for frail geriatric patients.

Summary: This study aimed to establish and validate a machine learning-based CT radiomics model to predict metachronous liver metastasis in patients with colorectal cancer. The results showed that the fusion model combining radiomics and clinical features performed the best and could provide valuable biomarkers to identify patients with a high risk of colorectal liver metastases.

Summary: Frailty is associated with adverse health outcomes and greater healthcare utilization. This study examined the relationship between pre-frailty and frailty with healthcare utilization in Puerto Rico. Pre-frailty was associated with a higher rate of doctor visits, while frailty was associated with a higher rate of ER visits, hospital stays, and doctor visits.

Summary: The study found that both 30-day and one-year postoperative mortality decreased significantly over time in all countries and age-categories. Despite improvements over time, there were substantial variations in one-year postoperative mortality among different countries and age-groups.

Summary: The study showed that more severe depressive symptoms, measured by the GDS-15, were associated with higher mortality in older patients with cancer. The symptoms on the GDS-15 increased during the first four months of the study, with 'prefer to stay at home' being the most prevalent and persistent, while 'not to be in good spirits most of the time' being the least prevalent.
